Denver Broncos' Darrent Williams (CB) gunned down
The Denver Post ^ | January 1, 2007 | Bill Williamson

Posted on 01/01/2007 4:34:43 AM PST by goarmy

Broncos right cornerback Darrent Williams was shot and killed this morning. After leaving a nightclub in a limousine, Williams was shot and killed near 11th and Grant in Denver. The team confirmed the death of Williams. A female passenger also was shot, according to a source familiar with Williams.

Williams was 24.

"I learned from the Denver Police Deprtment that this incident has occured," Williams' agent, Jeff Griffin said early Monday morning. "No other details have been released. I sincerely offer my condolences and feelings to his family."

Williams was the Broncos' starting right cornerback and played his final game for the team in a 26-23 overtime loss to the San Francisco 49ers that eliminated Denver from the playoffs on New Year's Eve.

The poster made a couple of mistakes. It was tackles, not sacks. And it was D.J. Williams (linebacker) not Darrent Williams who had the 7 tackles.

Darrent had 2 tackles.

RIP, Darrent. We'll miss you.

""There's "being out late" and there's "being out late". Did you stop and party at a club at the end of your shift?""

Did I miss the memo telling us that you are king, and have declared curfews? I've got to learn to read all my emails.

This is so sad this time yesterday I was watching the game on television. I almost feel guilty for cheering against him so that my Chiefs would make the playoffs. Seems pretty unimportant now.

Makes me think of Cory Lidle. Got knocked out of the playoffs and died thereafter. Can't help but wonder if he would have been out that late if he would have had to be in for a player meeting today to prepare for the game.

Condolences from a Chiefs' fan.

You are thinking of D.J. Williams if you are referring to the 7 tackles, Darrent Williams is a corner back for the broncos, not an outside linerbacker.

Here is a link to the roster: http://www.denverbroncos.com/page.php?id=396

My condolences for his family and friends.

He was from Ft. Worth. Played for OSU while my son was there. He was an exciting player to watch.....and from all accounts, a very nice young man. Just breaks my heart. He was so young and so talented. Seems a bright future was his for the taking.

I haven't been able to get much news about what exactly happened. A drivers side window was shot out in the back of the limo....maybe he was sitting there..

IIRC, the shoulder injury was an ongoing problem. On the OSU boards, everyone is pretty much in shock. D-Will was a much loved Poke. I know that I have great memories of watching him play in Stillwater.

I'll try to lighten up as you are correct on that score.

However, locking one's door and being afraid to go out at night are two different things.

As I said, I do what I want when I want and have no curfews. The night is not for the timid, but it is not reserved for pimps, whores and thieves. That is my main point.

Darrent won a lot of fans here in Denver with his speed, his overall talent and gutsy play at corner. Plus, he was a great punt returner.

I thought we had our cornerback problems solved for a few years, which makes it hurt even worse. (My apologies for being selfish at a sad time)

My prayers go out for his family; we've ALL lost a fine young man.

I've almost always been a Bronco fan.....ESPECIALLY since you all chose D-Will and Tatum Bell! My Orange Pride soared!

I don't think you're selfish at all...he gave something the Broncos' needed and the fans appreciated that. From what I've read, he was liked by his team. And you're right. His death is a big loss for all....family, friends, fans, teammates and coaches.

He was riding in a limo when he was shot. How anybody could tell who was in it is anybody's guess. It was a stretch Hummer with blacked out windows.

"Go back to your cave knucklehead...."

Really? I am led to think you don't 'follow thru'.....I,too, worked many a midnite shift.....but I wouldn't say--- I/YOU were 'OUT.'

But,it's happened b4 when I made the same comment-----same,not too rational thought, just reaction without thought... Shame that I would have to exempt, in the line, those of us who were really at legitimate work.

I am sorry for your alum loss. I haven't kept up with "Boone's boys" much, not being in-state anymore and reading the news or hearing the names, except our one game per year. With Cale's brother as head coach now, I probably should. (Fiesta Bowl in 2 hours!)

Condolences.

The latest I am hearing was that it was a party for Denver Nuggets players and that Williams and Walker were among the invitees. Some sort of confrontation took place and the Williams' party decided to leave. Whoever the shooters were followed them, pulled up alongside the limo at a stop light and opened fire. There is talk that Williams died in Walker's arms but that sounds like too much drama unless Walker confirms it.

On Sunday against the 49ers, he had a sack, a forced fumble, and led the team with seven sacks.

You mean seven tackles. He was indeed an exceptional young man. Just revolting the culture that young black men feel they need to be a part of to be "hip".

I thought it might be tackles but I cut and pasted it directly from the ESPN web site.

As I said earlier, I posted what ESPN had up on their web site.

Jackson said there was a dispute at a nightclub several blocks from the shooting where Williams and his group had attended a party. He said the argument didn't specifically involve Williams, according to witnesses, and the confrontation wasn't physical, just taunts.

"Why this happened, we're not sure," Jackson said.

Police were searching for a white Suburban or Tahoe with dark-tinted windows.

The club identified by police advertised a New Year's Eve event celebrating the birthday of Denver Nuggets basketball player Kenyon Martin. Mark Warkentien, Denver's vice president of basketball operations, spoke with police, who instructed him not to comment, team spokesman Eric Sebastian said.

The club _ variously called Shelter or Safari _ is on the second floor of an building in a once-seedy stretch south of downtown that has a growing number of trendy bars, clubs and restaurants.

Gambling related...

There may be more to it than that. Here's part of the updated AP story:

The club identified by police advertised a New Year’s Eve event celebrating the birthday of Denver Nuggets basketball player Kenyon Martin. The Nuggets canceled practice Monday.

Mark Warkentien, Denver’s vice president of basketball operations, said police spoke with him but asked him not to comment. “We’ll respectfully honor their request,” Warkentien said. “And if the Denver police need us in any way, we’ll cooperate fully.”

The club — variously called Shelter or Safari — is on the second floor of an building in a once-seedy stretch south of downtown that has a growing number of trendy bars, clubs and restaurants. Outside, the building was unmarked except for a big sign from a former occupant, Jonas Bros Furs. Inside, the ceiling was strung with Christmas lights and set off with several fireplaces.

Apparently this wasn't a "seedy" nightclub but was a party involving several local sports celebrities. I wonder why the Nuggets organization would need to "cooperate fully."
