Ambrose Bierce is the greatest American writer of the 19th century.

To my mind, it was Mark Twain.

I really tried to like Mark Twain, but I can't. Bierce is it for me. Have you read the Complete Civil War Stories? "Owl Creek" isn't the best, imo, even though it's in the high school anthologies.

Wish Mark Twain was doin' the repotin' on this Hangin'! He woud do it justice! "It was a good hanging. The whole town turned out and he hanged good!"
