Retooled immigration legislation that could get a vote in Congress by spring amounts to "amnesty" for millions of undocumented workers, Rep. Peter King (R-L.I.) fumed yesterday.
"I just have no support for this at all," King told The Post. "This is clearly amnesty."
King was responding to word that a bipartisan bill is being prepared for consideration by the new incoming Congress.
According to a Senate Democratic aide, Sens. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.) have already opened "preliminary" discussions with two House members over the revised legislation. Negotiators are considering scrapping a complicated proposal that would require an estimated 7 million illegal immigrants now living in the United States to jump across the border before returning to apply to become citizens.
That provision would also mean that illegals in the country for less than two years would not be guaranteed a slot in a guest-worker program.
Congress also may nix a border fence that many conservatives say is needed to stop the flow of illegals.
Legislation to build the fence passed Congress and signed by President Bush this year. But it hasn't been fully funded, and can be amended by a new law.
Most Democrats oppose the fence, as does Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, who prefers a "virtual" fence in some areas.
But conservative Republican opponents of easing the path to citizenship for illegals lost major clout in the elections. "The fact that the Democrats are controlling Congress will definitely make it easier" to pass, said King.
But Democrats in conservative districts won't be "enthused" about supporting a bill that could be a political liability, he said. "The dynamics have certainly changed for the better!" crowed the Senate Democratic aide.
Critics said the original Senate bill is unworkable because of its provisions based on how long illegal

fyi...
Rep. Peter King (R-L.I.)
?? What state is "L.I."
Well, there is a whole industry which produces forged documents to accomodate this constituency.
Hopefully we can do that without Boxer Rebellion II, but you never can tell eh!
Lon-GUY-land. Home of the five towns.
Strong Island.
Problem is I can acquire an almost unlimited number of Chinese and Indian nationals (and a nearly unlimited number of Indonesians, Pakistanis or Nigerians) at far less cost and outfit them with all the documentation they need faster than the domestic forgery industry can provide for the Mexicans.
In the end, the Mexicans will still be uneducated illegal aliens without documentation of presence, and we Republicans will have 10 to 20 million new hard-core Republican voters, fully educated ~ most with a Masters degree or better.
The Dems are doomed I tell you, doomed!!!
Agents in Mumbai are working hard as I speak.
More accustomed to seeing the state after a congressman's name. City seems to come after state reps names.
PING for later...
As opposed to
Staten Niland -- home of unfinished roads, the mafia, and Great Kills
Any Congressman or Senator who votes for this should be recalled.
Long Islanders will sit you down and tell you they want to secede from NY State. And they're about as vocal about it as people from South Jersey...at least that's the way it was 20 years ago when I lived in the area.
NYC newspaper - NYC readers want to see if a Congresman is from the city or the 'burbs or whether he's from some unimaginably far away place like Herkimer County or Plattsburgh.
Either way, if you come from there or the Swamp you are a card-carrying member of the bridge & tunnel crowd. Bear in mind that the real Sonny Corleone was from Strong Island by way of the Bronx, not Staten Niland. He died on the Jones Beach causeway.
Amnesty is not the solution to the problem. Once McCain and his DemocRATS give the illegal aliens a piece of paper advising them that they are now an "americano de los estado unidos" (a la the Wizard of Oz), we are going to need 20 million more illegal aliens to do the jobs they are no longer going to want to do.
Ah, gotcha.
This is great. I can't even threaten my republican rep anymore. Since last time I told him that he would wind up losing his job over this.... He lost his job over this.
My new Democrat congressman is a raving lunatic. He just wouldn't understand why amnesty is wrong.
Wasn't the Godfather was filmed in Forest Hills--Staten Island?
Regardless of the trivia, the island has its share of wise guys. How else can you explain the highway construction in the borough?
