Islam has absolutely nothing to offer Western Civilization.

Except for cheap oil. They pump it out of the ground at a cost of around $5/barrel and sell it for $50/barrel. The billions made on the cheap oil is used to finance the export of Islamofacism around the globe. In every place on earth you find a McDonald's restaurant and a mosque, with radical clerics calling for the death of infidels.

"What we wanted was not to take over that holy place, but to create in it, together with you and other faiths, an ecumenical space unique in the world which would have been of great significance in bringing peace to humanity."

When Christians are free to worship in Santa Sophia.

Deal?

Well, while we at it...how about demanding that the moslems tear down the mosque they built upon the Holy Temple in Jerusalem?

That was a Holy place of the Hebrews for centuries before there ever was an Islam.

They purposely built their mosque on top of the Temple and even now when Jews come to the wall below to pray the moslems throw stones at them.

You want to pray in a church? Fine....turn Christian.

The pope should tell them no. The Christians recaptured their land after the Islamic invasion. Muslims captured and destroyed over 30,000 Christian churches from Turkey to Morocco. Muslims never cede access back to Christians after stealing or destroying a Christian church. There is no reason for the pope to permit them any access for "Islamic" worship.

Sure, Just as they allowed the Pope to worship at the Church in Turkey. When Muslims learn to treat other religions with equality, then we will treat them in the same way.

"The mosque itself was built on the site of the earlier cathedral of St Vincent which was demolished by Cordoba's Muslim rulers following the Islamic invasion and occupation of parts of southern Spain in the eight century."

Throughout history, this is what muslimes do. They invade a country, destroy its sacred sites, build a mosque (like the dome of the rock)on the site of the destroyed temple and claim it a sacred muslim site. These people are relentlessly demanding and the lowest of the low. They deserve no respect from any other religion or culture.

No thanks...they're not welcome in our Cathedrals.

If they want to worship their shiny black rock, they can do it somewhere else...like in a bathroom...where the koran deposit units are located.

Pope Benedict can take some advise from Nancy Reagan, "Just say NO!"

How many former churches and cathedrals in the Middle east were converted to mosques?

"The group said in their letter: "What we wanted was not to take over that holy place, but to create in it, together with you and other faiths, an ecumenical space unique in the world which would have been of great significance in bringing peace to humanity."

Christianity is diametrically opposed to the teachings of islam, and the notion that islamics think they have some right to use a Catholic Church as a mosque is an abominable display of gall. Islam is like a cancer, it can never exist where Christianity is without infecting its surroundings with evil.

perfectly legitimate counter-offer as far as I'm concerned!

In the 31 years since Franco died, and a few less since the Guardia Civil stopped wearing the forest green uniform with the 3-pointed patent leather hat, Spain has been in a headlong race downhill. Since Zapatero assumed power in '04, the race has become a stampede!

It's very, very sad for me to witness the crumbling of a once-proud religious country. Spain is willing to betray their history and sell their future, all for a pack of liberal promises that will one day soon collapse under the weight of economic reality.

The Roman Catholic cathedral had originally been a mosque but was converted into a cathedral in the 13th century.

The mosque itself was built on the site of the earlier cathedral of St Vincent which was demolished by Cordoba's Muslim rulers following the Islamic invasion and occupation of parts of southern Spain in the eight (sic) century.

Typical Muslim hypocrisy the world over: It should be shared/returned to us, because you took it from us, after we built it on the ruins of your cathedral/church/temple. How DARE you take it back, and deny us our rightful booty?

For prime examples, see entries on: Jerusalem; Constantinople Istanbul; Kashmir....
