Prime Minister Wishes Canadians A Merry Christmas

23 December 2006
Ottawa, Ontario

For many of us the holiday season is a time to take a break from our daily routines to be with those we love.

My wife Laureen and our children Benjamin and Rachel join me in extending our best wishes to you and your family for the Christmas and holiday season.

Christmas in Canada is a rich tradition – a time to celebrate with family and friends and enjoy the winter pursuits our great country has to offer.

For many, Christmas is also a time to reflect on our faith, to fully appreciate our good fortune to be part of a peaceful and prosperous country and to understand our responsibility to share our blessings with those less fortunate here and around the world. This holiday season, I would ask that we give special thought to the brave men and women serving our country abroad and to their loved ones waiting here at home.

From my family to yours, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah, Seasons Greetings, and best wishes for a healthy and rewarding New Year.

Fostering Pets

Prime Minister Harper with two foster cats at 24 Sussex Drive

All too often, family pets such as dogs and cats find themselves in shelters as a result of being abandoned or rescued.

The Harpers are proud to support and participate in the Ottawa Humane Society’s Foster Program, which provides temporary homes for pets in the community who are not yet ready for adoption.

The program fosters out animals with mild health or behaviour issues who need individual care and nurturing to help them recover before they are adopted by new, loving foster families.

Laureen and Stephen have been foster parents to many cats during the past year. At any given time, the Harpers have provided foster care to numerous cats at their Ottawa home. Recently, the Harper family adopted one of their foster cats Cheddar.

Similar programs are in place across Canada. Foster pet programs help thousands of animals – including cats, dogs, birds and rabbits – each year. These programs allow:

* Those who want to make a difference for an animal to do so, without making a long-term commitment.

* Foster parents to see if they are ready for long-term pet ownership.

Contact your local SPCA or Humane Society to find out if they offer a foster pet program.

Many thanks. It even looks as if we could get some rain for Christmas. That would be a great Christmas present in this part of the world.

He looks gay with those cats. *REAL* men don't have photos taken with cats... Of course, he *IS* Canadian, eh?

Luckily, another FReeper had these saved:

YUP!! He just went over the top for me. I have fostered and rescued cats for 20 years. What a great guy in EVERY way. Canada has finally been blessed with a good Prime Minister. My prayer is that he is elected with a Majority Government over and over and over again!! Wake up you Liberal Provinces.!! CO
