Mother: Ferret, not pit bull, gnawed off baby's toes
BENTON, La. The parents of a month-old girl whose toes were gnawed off while they slept apparently disagree about whether the culprit was their ferret or their 6-week-old pit bull.
Mary Hansche, 22, told KTBS-TV on Tuesday that she thinks it was the ferret. "The way the bite marks were on her foot. The ferret being out of its cage. I knew it wasn't the dog," she said.

"We were told that the puppy had blood on its fur. But when the officers arrived there, the animal did not have blood on its mouth," he said.
Natale said which animal did it won't affect charges against the Hansches, who were booked Dec. 10 on charges of child desertion and criminal negligence and remained jailed Wednesday in lieu of $50,000 bond each.

Their daughter has been released from the hospital and is in state custody.
The Hansches were asleep on a mattress on the floor and the baby in a carrier next to the mattress when her cries woke them, police have said. They were not tested for alcohol or drugs, since such tests would not be needed to prove the charges, Natale said Wednesday.
Defense attorney Pam Smart said she is waiting for results of a hair analysis to back up the couple's statement that they were not using drugs.

She also said their bonds are too high for misdemeanors. A bond reduction hearing is scheduled next month.
Both pets were released from quarantine but will remain in the Bossier City animal shelter until the court case is over, Natale said. Either the court or the city may decide their fate, he said.

I hope it's put to death now before it has a chance to grow up and do even more damage.
People are bitten everyday by virtually every breed of dog.
To keep up with your smugness, I'll bet all dog owners are really proud of themselves.
"or are you okay with other breeds who actually bite more often running amok."
There ARE no other breeds that bite more than pits, unless you're counting all the toy poodles that go yipping after the mailman. But remember: A tiny scratch on the ankle bone really doesn't compare to deep lacerations all across a person's head, arms, torso and legs.
Unless you're living in PitWorld.
Can you back up your stats?
I thought this story was suspect. A pit would have chewed off the entire leg, at least.
Maybe because the rest of the dogs weren't able to give up their busy mauling schedules, and so sent their assholes as representatives?
You can't be serious.
Oh, you bet I am.
Well, you have changed my opinion. You were chased up a tree by a dog, so that means the whole breed is awful.
Thanks for sharing.
So am I the only one who found the use of "[snip]" to be strangely inappropriate in this copy of the article?
Bare feet can attract a playful ferret like roses attract bees. And more than one ferret owner has stepped out of the shower and right into an ambush a musky little friend lying in wait to attack the toes!
You think a 6 week old puppy should be killed (not to mention no one even knows who committed this act)?
You are hopeless.
Like I said, when your delusion catches up with you I've got no sympathy. You state no facts. You are quite full of personal insults. Enjoy your fetish breed.
The HUGE MAJORITY of news stories on pits attacking humans include a dumbfounded owner saying something like, He never attacked nobody before today.
And then the cameras turn to the morgue guys taking away the body of a child or old lady.
They DO go off. Whenever they attack and severely injure or kill someone, the cops or animal control take them away and put them down.
I hate to bring logic into this, but: If it's something that pits did with regularity, wouldn't they have been prevented from doing it subsequently?
Another way of putting that: If every pit is put down every time one of them mauls, maims or kills someone...uh, doesn't that prove that they do indeed "go off"?
You're wrong.
And investing your emotions in dogs that statistically are more likely to turn on YOU than any other breed is a liberal trait. You think you can invest your character in the dog...that your superior whatever will supplant the tendencies of this breed. Ain't gonna happen.
Ever hear the fable about the scorpion and the frog?
Sleep well.
I was TELLING you.
Keep your murder-dogs 100 meters away from me at all times and there will be no harm to them.
You have failed to support your assertion that pits are human-aggressive.
Let me know how that goes.
Until then, if you want to call my knowledge of and affection for the breed a "fetish" so be it. You'd never know it if you met me on the street. I just love dogs, and have an appreciation for the breed I grew up with and have subsequently rescued that has been bastardized by the MSM.
"Can you back up your stats?"
Of course I can. Chapter and verse. But I'm not going to waste my time, because you suffere what the shrinks call cognitive dissonance--you don't believe you're lyin' eyes.
No matter WHAT "stats" I would present, you would deny them, for one illogical reason or another.
Answer this: Is there ANY proof you would concievably accept that would make you say, You know what, maybe this is a dangerous breed after all?
Of course not. You're like an effing O.J. juror. You don't CARE what the facts are--you just can't be wrong.
You aren't worthy of my dogs' company. But if an a@@wipe like you ever threatened my dogs, it wouldn't be them you'd have to worry about, pal.
