Now there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon, who was righteous and devout.
He was waiting for the consolation of Israel and the Holy Spirit was upon him.
It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die until he had seen the Lord's Christ, the Messiah.
Moved by the Spirit, Simeon went into the temple courts.

When Mary and Joseph brought the Child Jesus to perform for Him what was required by the custom of the Law,
Simeon took Jesus up in his arms and praised God, saying,

'Sovereign Lord, as You have promised, you now dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen Your Salvation,
which You have prepared in the sight of all people, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to Your people Israel.'

The Child's father and mother marveled at what was said about Him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, His mother,
'This Child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against,
so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your soul, too.'     (Luke 2:25-35)

Simeon had been faithful in his expectation and anticipation of the Promised Messiah.

Are you are preparing to return a gift that you received yesterday for Christmas?
Probably all of us have done so at one time or another in the past.
For whatever reason, some gifts just aren't quite right.

Perhaps you can remember a particularly bad gift or a disappointing Christmas.
Those things do happen sometimes, for a variety of reasons.
Sometimes those "bad" gifts can be returned or exchanged; but sometimes they can not.
That is just the way life is.

What is sad is that some people have come to expect all of their wants and wishes to be met.
And when they are not, or when life isn't exactly like they planned, those people get disappointed and decide to exchange their lives or circumstances or situation for something else.

And an even sadder consequence is - some people apply the same principle to their spiritual lives.

When God doesn't give them whatever they want, or they don't get their way, or when God doesn't answer their prayers just like they designed them, they are disappointed and want something else.

But that doesn't work.

Whatever Simeon expected the Messiah to be, he accepted Jesus Christ as the fulfillment of God's covenant with His people.

Simeon accepted what God chose to provide - which happened to be His perfect plan of salvation through Jesus Christ our Lord.
