For nearly two weeks, Swift & Co. officials fought to block an impending immigration raid they knew was coming.
According to newly unsealed federal-court records filed in Amarillo, Texas, on Dec. 4, the company sought an injunction to stop U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement from raiding six of its plants across the nation.
On Dec. 7, the company's request was denied. And on Tuesday, the raid went forward.
While waging the sealed court fight, Swift scrutinized its workers' employment documents. Nearly 400 workers nationally "simply disappeared" because of that review, said Don Wiseman, the company's general counsel.
"We never fired anyone," he said. "We didn't have to."

I agree. Swift also needs to feel pain by customers no longer buying their products.
Great, now the people who had their identities stolen know who to sue (and those pockets are nice and deep).
I already avoid buying any Tyson products. Now I have to add Swift to my list.
"What you fail to realize is that Swift was voluntarily enrolled, at their expense, in fedguv's pilot employee verification system.
The goal is to get more employers to voluntarily participate. The Swift raid will cause employers to not want to participate.
Bottom line, fewer illegals will be detected."
~~~
Well, of course they will not be detected if the employer decides not to follow the agreement they agreed to. (and aren't caught)
Ben, there's nothing hard to figure out here. Swift just figured it could sign an agreement which Swift figured the govt. would not enforce, then Swift flouted the agreement and signed up lots and lots of illegals, directly or indirectly. They completely gutted the terms of the agreement!
They're obviously guilty.
Actually we are not in a spot where we need employers for detection. It's not like illegals are hiding. The Feds would have (do have) more citizen support on this subject as they have ever had on anything. The majority of Americans DO want them arrested and deported.
Feds are not doing there job because they pander to the pro-illegal factions (apparently the ones with the purses if not the public support). It amazes me once they do a bust we always here it followed a long on-going investigation (so many years or months). Do they really think they are fooling anybody?
How painful to see our votes really do not count and our voices really aren't heard.
How about if their sales plummet for a few months.
Generally, is the hiring of illegal aliens perceived as a positive thing by stockholders?
That is an honest question; I have no clue.
Nice racket going on here!
The Gov. sets up a program that leaks like a sieve, The Co. can have all the illegals it wants , When raided it says The feds said they were ok. Then round up a new batch
Everyones off the hook.
What are they guilty of? What have they been charged with?
Same here but I don't think I buy any of their products now.
You might be right. Smithfield's plant in Milan, Missouri (formerly Premium Standard Farms) is a Mexican timebomb just waiting to go off.
Actually the company needs to be subjected to asset forfeiture.
They knowingly hire illegal aliens and knowingly aid and abet them and knowingly obstruct justice by warning illegals ahead of time that raids are coming.
The fact that they engage in a thinly disguised veneer of cooperation with the government is incidental, and can be viewed as a typical criminal delaying tactic.
Once their factory has been confiscated it can be sold off to a company willing to play by the rules, just as aircraft and other assets of drug runners are sold off to legitimate operators vetted by Customs, ICE, etc.
Asset forfeiture is applied to the smallest of defendants across the country guilty of the smallest of misdemeanors. A major company engaged in a massive criminal enterprise of RICO levels should most certainly be subject to the same penalties.
Yup. That's the way U.S. cops work. No whining, no crying, no obstructing, no nothin'. They just show up with the warrants and down come the doors.
Don't matter if yer a Big, Important cow killing company or just some shmoe having a fight with the wife.
The "Executives" (say it with a reverent tone) at Swift should be kissing the damn ground right now that they weren't part of the handcuff daisy chain that got loaded onto the buses.
They sure as hell should have been.
If you go to the Swift Brands website you can email them your opinions on their illegal activies.
Also read their Code of Conduct. I guess none of their Senior Executives could sign off on this.
Generally, is the hiring of illegal aliens perceived as a positive thing by stockholders?Yes, yes it is... so long as they don't get caught.
The primary goal of any corporate officer is to maximize shareholder value, barring any more specific direction. Using illegals reduces labor expenses, which serves to increase shareholder value. So unless the shareholders vote a resolution directing the board to "only hire legal workers" (either explicitly or implicitly by instruction to follow the law and act in an ethical manner), it is their duty to hire illegals.
