What do you think we should do with Iraq?

Well, I see everyone has their own opinion on what we should do in Iraq. So I figured I'd start a central thread for all ideas, comments, and debate.

If the Mods don't like it, or think it's no good than they can delete it.

Look, I'm not here to tell the President or anybody in the government how to do their job, but I know there are intelligent people on this board and I wanted their opinions on the situation and what they think should be done.

Read the riot act to Syria and Iran -- hit them hard if they don't comply.

My original contention was that we should have approached the reluctant "allies" like the French to send in Police forces for the occupation after battle, since they were so unwilling to engage in the fighting. It was easy to see that we'd need as many folks in police and nurse's uniforms as we would in US Army unitorms in order to establish a democracy in the middle east. But, since we didn't follow that line of approach, we now have a civil war on our hands. If we were to set our sights again on the police/nurse approach, we might still be able to pull this one off. I think we won the war in Iraq; we just haven't won the peace.

I also think we should simply divide the country. The Kurds deserve their own country, they've proven to be good allies. We could work with them to carve out a section of Iraq, set their sights on carving some territory out of Iran, and then when they're done with that, we can help "negotiate" with our other "allies", the Turks, to secure Kurdish autonomy in what presently eastern Turkey.

That leaves the Sunnis and Shiites to divide up what's left. We would occupy the areas between the two warring factions. Also, the UN/US should occupy the oil-producing regions and parcel out the revenue according to whatever plan they come up with. That gives all the sides something to argue about rather than shooting at us.

Osama admits that hundreds, if not thousands, of terrorists have infiltrated Iraq from all over the Middle East - World to stop us from winning in Iraq.

With such a "Target Rich" zone of combatants, I think we should admit the ineveitable civilian casualties, pull our troops out, and just "Nuke it from orbit - it is the only way to make sure."

We send the US troops to guard the borders, particularly to prevent the influx of more terrorists from Iran and Syria, then turn to the government in Baghdad and say we are doing our part, now you get control over the situation.

it's already decided - the Democrats are in control of handling the withdrawal now and will be for the near future. Iraq will ally with Iran and face off against the Saudis in a few years.

I think we should destroy Ancient Babylon (Iraq) just in case Ahmadinejad is fighting to bring the Apocapalyse through a Holy war,

or.....

Destroy Ancient Babylon just in case Ahmadinejad is trying to rebuild the caliphate,(Iraq being the historical capital).

In other words, I'm cool with staying the course.

Carve Kurdistan out of Iraq and Iran, and ally it with Turkey..take over the Sunni triangle and give it to the turkmen, Assyrians, and Chaldeans...let the Shia know what happens to our enemies, and assure them that if they don't play nice we know where they live.

Old Guard has nailed it. The only amendment I would make is to built a Ramstein-type American airbase in Kurdistan (the Kurds have invited us to do it.) That will control the air space for the whole region and scare the daylights out of Iran and Syria. As for the Iraqis, let the Shiites and Sunnis fight it out among themselves. It's dumb to try to stand between them.

Let the military determine what "victory" means to them, and then let them achieve it.

Only solution is to go back in time DeLorean-style and win the mid-term elections. Iraq's fate was decided this past November. It's done - it'll be handed over to a Saudi-Iran fight for influence and power there.

Only problem with your theory is that Turkey would alley with a Kurdish state. I agree they should make one, but we would need to be clear to both Turkey and the Kurds that any provocation on either side is a big no no.
