Of course not. But it would have better under a Pinochet that was friendlier to democracy, and who didn't subscribe to the sort of brutal tactics he employed.

You're acting as if the Goldwater quote excuses ANY extremism.

"killing Marxists is defensive in nature and is a ok."

Thank you for all your blanket sweeping statements on morality. Go back to DU and lampoon FR no further, agent provocateur.

You seem to have a difficult time understanding the concept that would should elevate ourselves above the behaviors of our enemies and not sink to them.

Pinochet's behavior wasn't elevated above that of Castro? Or do you really see no difference between the death of 3,000 and the death of hundreds of thousands? Or millions?

That's nice and all...for stable countries such as the USA.

Stable? Allende was elected. Allende's predecessor was elected. His predecessor was elected... Chile had a functioning Democratic system, and given Allende's unpopularity, that should have been used to remove him.

I'm sorry that I can't support Marxism and I'm sorry that I recognize Marxism for the horror that it is, and the cost it entailed. My sincere apologies.

Sorry, but that's the sort of moral relativism that excuses murders or at least the sort of blanket disrespect for due process that leads to murder by the state.

Sure. Maybe a Jim Baker type. He could have negotiated with the nice Commies.

The Congress and the Supreme Court asked for his removal. He had to be forced out. Thank God that Pinochet stepped in and did what was necessary.

For crying out loud, IT WAS A CIVIL WAR. In a "kill or be killed" situation you don't get to observe the niceties of a more gentile community. Study our own Civil War in the Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas, and Indian Territory area and you will find it wasn't much different than what went on in Chile in the early 1970's.

Again, fighting communism in the Cold War is no excuse for brutality and authoritarianism. It is no leftism to support freedom and democracy. It is not trolling to call out those who support a man who supported murder through his state.

You're entitled to your opinion..but coming from a country where communists ruled, I am entitled to state that your position is quite naive.

Funny, I don't seem to remember when the Union army massacred its prisoners.

There is no difference. The murder of one is a horrible, horrible crime. Once you get past one, we're only talking scale. The only righteous leader is one who does not murder at all. Is that really such a difficult concept to grasp?

For heaven's sake, are you saying that the only alternative to executing people just for their party affiliations is patting them on the head and letting them go foment rebellion?

Please don't equate the innocent dead of 9/11 with Chilean Marxists. That's fundamentally dishonest.
