SAN FRANCISCO - An effort to clean up some of the city's seedier neighborhoods and rid the streets of junkies, hookers and runaways has run headlong into San Francisco's free-to-be-who-you-are ethos.
Nearly four decades after the Summer of Love, residents and merchants frustrated with what they regard as blight are turning to the city for help or taking revitalization into their own hands.
But other residents of the Tenderloin district and Haight-Ashbury contend a crackdown would rob their neighborhoods of their identity and violate everything San Francisco stands for.
Joey Cain, a board member of the Haight-Ashbury Neighborhood Council, complained that those who would drive the vagrants from the neighborhood are turning their backs on the Haight's "historic obligation" to shelter the downtrodden.
This is, after all, the city that proved so appealing to the Beats, the hippies and practically every other brand of noncomformist.

A huge percentage out in the Richmond district, and Sunset district. And most are ILLEGALS with anchor babies.
LOL! I remember when anarchists on the Haight did some illegal things to chain stores. And that horrible drugstore on Haight Street (Upper Haight) which fought tooth and nail to keep any drugstore chain out.
I've seen the homeless doing it on Market Street, and The Gays doing it in the bushes in the park. Buenavista Park in the Haight is where there are hustlers, but because of the Gay Agenda, the city looks the other way.
And the windmills in the GG Park. Again, the Gay Agenda rules, and looks the other way. White liberals get disgusted, but, have conflicts with their liberalism about things like that.
We finally left. In June.
I'm breathing a HUGE SIGH OF RELIEF!
You're 100% right.
I can not stand Mayor Moron, and you're totally right. I don't know if you remember me, but we moved to Santa Rosa, and it's fantastic.
She's 25. Wait til she's 55, a druggie, sick and homeless and see how many people will toss her a quarter.
I suppose homelessness is not an option? ;-)

I'll never forget my first day in the bay area. The company flew me into SFO and put me up in a hotel on 8th and Market. Being a wide eyed Midwesterner I took a walk the first night several blocks down Market and back to take in some sights. I was panhandled at least 5 times. One of those panhandlers I gave $5.
When I returned to the hotel I stopped in the lobby bar and while talking to the bartender I told him what I did. The bartender became very serious and told me never do that again. He went on to say how many of the panhandlers can make 20,000- 25,000 dollars a year begging, tax free. Begging is a business in SF.
I've learned since then the best way to politely blow off a begger is say to them when panhandled, " I've already given to someone today." They'll leave you alone with that line.
I'm complaining because it was Moron Newsom's campaign promise that he would do something to clean up the homeless situation. It was an empty campaign promise, as we have seen. With all these stories of bums relieving themselves publicly (uh, can't you freepers make your images a little less graphic?), maybe I'll call the mayor's office to complain.
Hi, yes, I remember you! I haven't seen your name in a long time. Congratulations on making it out of the city. < :D
