Duh, it was Nov. 2002. We were at Disney World and actually had Thanksgiving dinner at Planet Hollywood. That was quite a different Thanksgiving.

Chief NASA astronaut Seve Lindsey is flying the weather reconnaissance aircraft out over the Atlantic northeast of the pad to look at an area of clouds moving toward the launch site. Weather officials want Lindsey's observations on the cloud conditions that could be over KSC at launch time.

Is the launch still expected to be visible up most of the east coast?Bill, were you able to get an answer to your question? I am visiting along the New Jersey coast this evening and I am hoping I can catch a glimpse.

In this view from NASA TV Joan Higginbotham holds a sign as fellow astronaut Nicholas Patrick (L) looks on as they prepare to board the Space Shuttle Discovery December 9, 2006. During STS 116's 12-day mission, the crew will continue construction on the International Space Station, rewiring the orbiting laboratory and adding a segment to its integrated truss structure. I have to go into the other room for a few minutes.
The Missus has got the "That Girl" marathon on and
I need to get updated on the launch.

Recent Solar Flare. Gary Palmer of Solar Minimum shares his animation (hi-res version/5mb) of recent solar flares, using 10 frames captured over a four-hour period. "If you look closely you'll notice the sunspot is moving; this is due to the subtle rotation of the Sun," he writes. "The recent activity on our sun has been very exciting. Just in the past few days there have been 2X, 4M, and 27 C Class flares which have predominately come from active region 930," he added. For more news on solar activity, visit spacewatcher.com

Launch Rosie toward the Sun and then show a tribute episode of "Pigs in Space!"
Sounds like a plan coming together to me!

I don't know if the flare would necessarily cause auroral activity, but I have been looking and see nothing extraordinary.

Thank you, AntiKev.
# Northeast: Concentrate your gaze low toward the south or south-southwest about 6 to 8 minutes after launch [See note below for fuller description of this suggestion].

Is anyone watching the countdown on NASA-Tv? At certain points, they switch to a view of the pad fron a distance, and you can see a red flame to the right of the pad. That can't be hydrogen, since it burns with a clear white flame. What is that?
