'colorized' (?) version of your pic above..
A small boat rescues a USS West Virginia crew member from the water after the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on Dec. 7, 1941 during World War II. Two men can be seen on the superstructure, upper center. The mast of the USS Tennessee is beyond the burning West Virginia. On Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese Imperial Navy navigator Maeda guided his Kate bomber to Pearl Harbor and fired a torpedo that helped sink the USS West Virginia. This week,(Dec. 3, 2006) Takeshi Maeda and John Rauschkolb a crewman aboard the West Virginia at the time of the attack. met face-to-face for the first time _ and shook hands. (AP Photo)

It is fitting to have a ship representing the United States under attack and defeat balanced by one representing American success and victory.

I've been in a cube all day. No access to TV. Cnn.com only referred to a Pearl Harbor war hero and that was a video I don't have access to.

On this day and everyday, we should all appreciate those that gave their lives in defense of our country. I was lucky enough to be able to speak to my 88 year old grandfather today, who was on shore leave when the attack hit. He ran to the beach and manned an anti aircraft gun during the entire battle, and only by God's grace, managed to escape serious injury. Throughout the war, he narrowly escaped death innumerable times as a battleship battery officer.
Had it not been for the sacrifice of so many Americans, myself, and many others, would not be here today.
Thank you to all of our veterans, we love you so much.

Altogether, the surprise attack killed 2,390 Americans and injured 1,178 You know, when the American death toll in Iraq reached 2,390 you'd think our stat-conscious Media would have drawn a parallel to the number of brave souls who died that day 65 years ago -- but then, we're not supposed to remember those things....

Thanks for sharing that with us. It's an honor to be able to hear a first person account of those events. I'm sure he is thinking about the gathering this week in HI.

"Shame on us all. "
At the end of the Constitutional Convention, a woman asked Ben Franklin whether we would have a monarchy or a republic. Franklin replied: "a republic if you can keep it".
We couldn't keep it. Welcome to the "democracy". God help us all.

That is a beautiful picture. I have been to the Arizona Memorial several times. Always a moving experience.
I was in Hawaii when "The Final Countdown" came out. It was showing at the Kam II drive in in Aeia Heights. It struck me how ironic the view was. Here I was watching the attack on Pearl Harbor on screen while The Real Thing was less than a mile away and 39 years apart. I still recall that moment. A few years later, I was at Pearl with friends waiting for the launch to the Arizona. The USS Missouri was in Pearl that day. That was a singularly moving sight. To see the two ships best known for our involvement in WW II. The one that was instrumental in getting us into the war and the ship know for our exit from the war. It was unbelievable.
I for one, appreciate the sacrifice all those who were involved in WW II for the defense of this country. That is a debt than can never be repaid.

This thread has been in Breaking News for a good portion of the day. An article about DirectTV's Sunday Ticket got more responses in an hour than this thread has received in over 24. What is wrong with people?
And I thought the low reply count for the Gates confirmation thread was upsetting. Sheesh.
