FROM THE SENATE Hearing on Robert Gates
The Senate Armed Services Cmte. holds an open hearing on the nom- ination of Robert Gates to replace Donald Rumsfeld as Sec. of De- fense. CIA director from 1991-93 under Presidents Bush & Clinton, Gates is currently President of Texas A&M University. Senators are expected to call for a new Iraq strategy during the hearing.
NOW ON C-SPAN2 & C-SPAN3
Warner: This was the best hearing I've seen in 28 years
Leven calling Gates a breath of fresh air
I want to know why their are being so nice to Gates .. (except Hellary & Bayh) ... their base was freaking out when he was picked
OMG .. Warner says this will send a strong message to the terrorists
rolling eyes
I think it does send a message that we can learn from our mistakes and reorganize.
I think it is a very strong message.
I get from Gates that he is worried about Iran and wants a strong Iraq around to help tackel Iran.
Great post, TX!!!
I saw the post hearing comments of Levin...and I gotta say..that unless Gates DOES sign on to a troop withdrawal in the near future...he isn't going to be much more successful than Rummy at getting any "concensus"...
However, if they confirm him...and they start their same old whining...they have to OWN their own responsibility.
What about Syria?
I sure didn't get what you did out of Gates...I heard someone that said he hadn't spent time in Iraq...and almost everyone that asked a question of him....got an answer that HE said he READ IN THE NEWSPAPER!!
C'mon...do we really want a DOD during this tenuous time to get his knowledge of world conditions from the MSM????
I sure don't.
Mo1...thanks so much for your posts telling what was going on...Tuesday is one of my days for lunch with kaybugs..
I also have to pick her up from school today during this afternoon session...so I hope you post any good stuff then also.
I missed Hillary...but, when I got in the car, Rush's show was coming on..and he said he had gotten a lot of e-mails complaining about Warner's statements about how he wants Bush to work with the NEW Congress...blah, blah.
It was Rush's opinion that Warner is being clever in trying to put more of the responisibility on the Dems...but, I got home in time to see Warner and Levin's after hearing interviews...
and I have to say...I think Warner is NOT that clever. He really wants Pres. Bush to go with the ISG + the NEW dem Congress...ugh
and Levin was practically doing cartwheels, and basically saying that what HE heard was the Gates WOULD be bringing the troops home...(dems always hear what they want to hear).
Thanks again Mo...for all of your help today.
hehe, I think he will get briefed if confirmed.
http://www.grd.usace.army.mil/news/releases/20061127.pdfGreat source, thanks for the link.
This link goes to a website -scroll down to page 7 - which itemizes the many projects completed (more that 2600) and underway (more than 600) in Iraq. Its map should complement Dio's map of Iran, because it shows Lots of little green dots signifying "DOD projects" all along the Iraq-Iran border plus some along the Syria and Jordan borders. Since it is .pdf format, I do not know how to reproduce the map here, but I hope someone will do it.
Oh...yeah, be snide.
I know that BUT I also know that since he was a member of the ISG...and has known for a while now that he was the DOD nominee...
I would have expected him to do MORE than read a damn newspaper to find out what is going on in N. Korea, Afghanistan, China.....I am sure he only reads the NYT and WaPo..
Gates is an old CIA guy who rose through the ranks before being appointed CIA head by Bush Sr Gates was originally nominated by Reagan in '87 for the same post but he withdrew his name because of so-called Iran Contra.
Two points: 1)Gates knows how to get "knowledge of world conditions", above and beyond the MSM. 2)Gates knows how to get by a committee made up of rabid Democrats.
Also note these were OPEN sessions. If he knows classified info, he is best not to let the world know what he knows in an open session.
So...he was only answering those questions by saying he "read about that in the newspaper, and other than that, I don't know"...
because he is pretending not know???
Oh..okay.
Yes.
Also, if I'm not mistaken, Gates' answers on Iran and Syria simply echo the position of his boss the CIC.
Actually, I think he answered that way to irritate you ;-)
Dear Chairman:
I absolutely assure you that no one in America is as patriotic as,
or as intelligent as, or as beautiful as, or as caring as, Senator Hillary Clinton.
I know this for a fact. Furthermore,
I have taken a survey where I 'live' and all agree with me. It was unanimous.
Sincerely, Vince "
I heard someone that said he hadn't spent time in Iraq...and almost everyone that asked a question of him....got an answer that HE said he READ IN THE NEWSPAPER!!
Well, I don't know your sources and I don't know exactly what Gates said about that, but he has been out of government and out of the CIA for a while.
Should have answered those questions by saying that he READ IT ON FREEREPUBLIC?
