". . . when he was at U.T.Austin . . "
WHAT????
FWIW, Gates is much-loved in conservative COLLEGE STATION, where he has a reputation for straight-shooting, look-you-in-the-eye, getting things done. No way is he saying, "We're losing, let's go home."
He's saying that a problem needs to be fixed, and, based on his track record at Texas A&M (the university with the barking dog mascot, not the cow), he can get the job done.
You guys take a deep breath. Gates and Bolton are cut from the same cloth. Pragmatic, tough as nails, and extremely competent.

He has said on several occasions that it is the President that makes the ultimate decisionsI am thinking that he wants to be able to say "don't blame me when this goes all wrong."

Hey know... at least small myopic vengeful 'conservatives' taught those republicans a lesson on spending and corruption though. So its all worth it... right?

Gates and Bolton are cut from the same cloth. Pragmatic, tough as nails, and extremely competent. You have no idea how much I want you to be right. But I just heard the guy say Osama was a bigger threat than Saddam and then turn around and say Osama was really largely symbolic. I still pray you are right.

And the one guy who wants to know what we are going to do to succeed in Iraq is...Joe Lieberman.

ABC News already ran the "Do you favor attacking Syria?" the 2 second pause and then "No" on their 'on the hour' newsbreak at 11am EST.
Didn't take long.

I loved Lieberman's question...and I liked Gates' answer to it...but, he is dreaming about a bipartisan cooperation on this.

Maybe Dubya should have given Harriet Myers a second look for SecDef, couldn't be much worse than this guy Gates.
