NET senior editor James Kim and his family are missing.

The 36-year-old Kim, his wife Kati, and daughters Penelope (4 years) and Sabine (7 months) left their home in San Francisco last week on a road trip to the Pacific Northwest. They were last seen on Saturday, November 25, in Seattle, according to the San Francisco Police Department, which has opened a missing persons' investigation. They were driving a 2005 silver Saab station wagon with California personalized plates of "DOESF."

Those with information about the Kim family's whereabouts are asked to contact the SFPD immediately--at 415-558-5508 during normal business hours and at 415-553-1071 after-hours. The Portland Police Department can be reached at 503-823-4000.

Well, that answers that! Surely the B&B owners told the Kims that when they called about leaving the key.

Also, Bear Camp Road was one of the places the police said specifically that they had searched. Well, back to Square One.

[Somebody already contacted LE about this road! - see link at end of post]

James Kim family missing. Could they have taken the infamous Merlin / Galice road ? Update 6 is here and is later info than below

I heard about the missing Kim family [ more recent Kim family missing] over at Techmeme [police information is here], thinking it’s unlikely I could offer any reasonable insight but it appears they were heading from Portland to Gold Beach on the Southern Oregon coast, an area with which I’m very familiar. Online and printed mapping is sometimes problematic here in Southern Oregon and there’s a road that appears on many maps as a “shortcut” to Gold Beach. But in fact in winter it can be treacherous and often closes with snow. It’s the Merlin to Galice to Gold Beach route. Cell phones don’t work in this mountainous remote area along the Rogue River valley and the coast. A few folks have been lost (many more just scared out of their wits in bad weather) along this tricky route through the Siskiyou National Forest.

... bookmark ping , & a "WHOOa"

. . . I lived in Portland in the HippieDippie days , heard about the wilds of the Northwest from rural natives ,... even in ideal conditions , they said it was unwise to venture into some areas with only one vehicle { that was way before cellphones }

Missing - Friends, relatives search for Californians between Roseburg and Gold Beach

Sunday, December 03, 2006
STEPHEN BEAVEN

Police, relatives and friends searched southwestern Oregon for a San Francisco family on Saturday after receiving a tip that the four ate at a Denny's restaurant in Roseburg on the night of Nov. 25.

A waitress served James and Kati Kim and their two young children at the restaurant about 8 p.m. on the day they went missing, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

Another witness told police he saw the Kims' car in Roseburg the same day, sheriff's Sgt. Roger Loomis said Saturday.

But after more than two days of searching, police had no clues about what happened to the family, which was headed home after visiting friends and family in Seattle and Portland during the Thanksgiving holiday.

"The last we know they were in Roseburg having dinner and everything was fine," Loomis said. "From then on, it's unclear."

Besides state police and the Josephine County Sheriff's Office, about a dozen relatives and friends looked Saturday for signs of the Kims in the Roseburg area, said Sarah Cain, who works with James Kim.

Deputies from Josephine County were expected to focus their search Saturday on Bear Camp Road east of Gold Beach, state police Lt. Gregg Hastings said.

State troopers searched Oregon 42 and U.S. 199, Hastings said. The California Highway Patrol also checked U.S. 199 and U.S. 101 south of the Oregon line.

More friends were headed to Southern Oregon on Saturday night and planned to search Oregon 42 today, along with James Kim's parents and sister.

The Kims left the Bay Area on Nov. 17, driving to Seattle to visit James Kim's uncle and aunt for Thanksgiving.

They're talking about this on Websleuths.

Supposedly the area is difficult at night even under ideal conditions ... there are very few cellphone towers, very desolate with many steep dropoffs.

Many people saying it should not have been attempted that late at night and in snowy conditions.

"No, I had to use the grabby hand to move west from Galice along the roads."

I looked at the aerial view and that road looks frightening, even in good weather. Maybe friends of the Kim's need to call in a psychic with a good track record. (Please don't flame me. I'm just trying to offer a suggestion as a possibility.)

I lit a candle for them in our FR Prayer Room candle room here:

http://www.gratefulness.org/candles/message.cfm?l=eng&cid=2077198

You could start a whole separate room for the Kims, of you want. The instructions are all there, if you click around, or I could FReepmail you. Prayers continue ...

(PS - here is the whole start page of our FR Prayer Room candle room: http://www.gratefulness.org/candles/candles.cfm?l=eng&gi=FRPR )

A little more news in this update. Some of you may remember Jim Kim as a guest or panelist on the old Tech TV that I loved to watch until I found FReeRepublic and eBay to stimulate my dead brain cells.

Any news tonight?

I hope they found a cave to hole up in, and that they had some crackers, baby food, and candy bars on board. Also that they're able to build a fire and keep it going.

I recall a young couple with a baby that did that a few years ago, and survived for about two weeks until rescuers found them.
