American Legion commander's credentials questioned
BOSTON The national commander of the American Legion never served in Vietnam despite describing himself in campaign material as a "Vietnam veteran of the U-S Army."
This is according to a report published today in the Boston Globe.
Paul Morin was elected August 31st to a one-year term as commander of the nation's largest veterans organization.
The Globe reported that Morin served in the Army from 1972 to 1974 at Fort Dix, New Jersey.
Neither the federal government nor the American Legion makes a formal distinction between veterans who served in Vietnam and those known as "Vietnam-era" veterans.
Morin, a Chicopee resident, defended his decision, saying -- "I am a Vietnam veteran."
But others were angered. Former U-S Senator Max Cleland of Georgia called it a "lie." He called Morin "an embarrassment to the organization."
