New U.S. dollar coins hide 'In God We Trust'

"In God We Trust," the official national motto since 1956 and a familiar sight on U.S. coins and currency, will be hard to find on the new presidential dollar coins scheduled for release to the public Feb. 15, 2007.

The new gold-colored dollar pieces, featuring images of U.S. presidents, will move the inscription from the face of the coin to the thin edge, along with the year and the previous national motto, "E Pluribus Unum," Latin for "Out of Many, One."

"For an Objectivist, our life is of the highest importance (selfishness is a virtue for us remember). That's not to say we wouldn't freely give it for something we believe in, just that it would be our choice and not out of some sense of duty."

...which all makes you perfectly undependable, which is all the point I was trying to make.

The point is that the particular human life and mind are infinitely changeable and mutable and thus no basis even in logic, much less law or morals, for any kind of oath anyone should rely upon.

You may be a nice person at the moment, but given the position you take on this, I would never turn my back on you.

"Ironically, though, it is our slouching slide toward full democracy that has made this phenomenon possible."

I'm not sure I follow. A "full democracy" would enable the tryanny of the MAJORITY, would it not?

I wish they took it off altogether. Last time I checked "we" includes me and I don't trust in any god. Bring back our old motto and put that on the front.

It must be nice to think that you and your opinion mean so much that you truly matter!

"I like the coin very much."

I hope they wind up in the dustbin of history, just like the last ones.

I for one will never accept one as change just as I wouldn't accept the last ones.

Every time I go in the bank I buy a roll or two of mixed Sacajawea and the Susan B Anthony's.

The change machine where I work exchanges these coins for paper bills. Automated checkout machines are unfazed by these, but human clerks are somewhat confused.

Knee jerks are unnecessary here.

I don't think you need to modify the word jerks at all in your statement. Jerks of any variety are unnecessary here.

"In God We Trust" has been on the money since 1866, the comment always bandied about that it's "only been the national motto since 1956" is phraseology used by people who want to get rid of it because, to them, it insinuates it hasn't been around very long and thus isn't culturally insinuated into the national psyche as much as us pro-motto people would like to believe... Personally though, I think we should ditch the politicians that currently decorate money and go back to representations of liberty, she's hotter anyway :-)

God Bless you and your family; and may God watch over and protect your two sons as they fight to defend those of us here at home.

Without our Lord, and the prayers from my FRiends on FR I know I would be a basket case also. Your sons are in our prayers.

About six years ago when the Sacajawea coin came out, my son was home on leave and we took a drive in the Virginia hills. I had a few of the coins in my pocket when we went into a tourist trap story in Sperryville, VA. I bought some peanuts and dropped three of the coins on the counter. The really old gentleman behind the counter, in a heartbeat, picked one of them up and in a voice I still have ringing in my ear he said, "What the hell?" I thought he was going to bite it to see if it was gold.

So if 95% of the people wanted to abolish the 1st amendment, that's ok?

Don't get me wrong, this isn't a Consitiutional matter, I never claimed it was. But on the issue of indivisual rights, it doesn't matter what the majority wants, they should not be able to violate them.

As for me leaving, where am I to go? This is the freest country there is. When I run out of options, the last place I'm going is to my closet to get my gun out.

Oh, and you wern't doing that well enough before 1957?

The national motto "In God We Trust" appeared on US Currency as early as 1864. From the article:

The most common place where the motto is observed in daily life is on U.S. currency and coinage. The first United States coin to bear this national motto was the 1864 two-cent piece. It wasn't until 1957 that the motto was permanently adopted for use on U.S. money.

Thank you - your son will be in my prayers as well.

My son is at Patrol Base Courage, so my verse is Joshua 1:9!
