Korean resident's group office raided over illegal shipments to Pyongyang

Police on Monday searched the Tokyo office of a Korean residents' group, a hospital and other locations on suspicion of involvement in illegal transactions of intravenous solutions intended for North Korea, law enforcers said.

The searched locations include the Tokyo branch of the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan, or Chongryon, in Bunkyo-ku, and the Niigata office of the group.

Tokyo police suspect that the director of an ear, nose and throat hospital in Tokyo's Setagaya-ku handed over 60 bags of intravenous solution without authorization to a 74-year-old North Korean woman at her request in May this year.

The woman attempted to ship the intravenous bags to North Korea by bringing them with her aboard the North Korean cargo-ferry Mangyonbong, which was moored in Niigata in May.

She didn't report the shipment of the intravenous bags to the Niigata customs office and hid them in a cardboard box containing clothing. Customs officials found the bags and prevented them from being shipped to North Korea.

Police suspect that Chongryon, which has close connections with North Korea, might have been involved in the woman's attempt to ship the bags to the country. The officials say that top government and military officials are often given priority to receive medicine in North Korea.

The intravenous solution the woman received from the Tokyo doctor contains amino acid and can be used as nutrition enhancement. (Mainichi)
