Islam IS radical. It wasn't "co-opted" by radicals. Islam preaches the doctrine that all non-Muslims must convert or die. Islam enslaves .7 billion women. You don't get much more radical than that.

I'm not shocked at all. CNN is just acting like an Islamic apologist.
Islam isn't being "hijacked" by radicals, They are just doing what the Koran teaches, they are being "good" muslims and following it's teachings to the letter.
