In his quest for the Republican presidential nomination, Arizona Sen. John McCain courted Thursday the group that vets conservative judicial nominees, the Federalist Society....

In his speech to a packed ballroom at a Washington hotel, McCain assured the group that despite last week’s sobering election returns for Republicans, “the election was not an affirmation of the other party’s program." ...

He spoke of the importance of judges who would strictly interpret the Constitution....

The reaction from the Federalists was polite, but not overwhelming. ...

Some social conservatives are wary of McCain because he has never shared their enthusiasm for such causes as banning same-sex marriage.

One Republican active in judicial confirmation politics, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said of McCain the day before the speech: “He’s regarded as a problem among conservatives on several levels.”

McCain was a leader of the bipartisan Gang of 14, a group of senators who averted a vote on changing Senate rules to abolish filibusters of judicial nominees. ...

McCain explicitly addressed his role as a leader of the Gang of 14, saying he was “proud of my role persuading my fellow Republican senators to respect the limits of our own power and not abolish the (judicial) filibuster rule.” ...

--If Bush's 3rd/4th nominees (if they come) and we get someone like Roberts or Alito through, I'll let the Gang of 14 slide.--

It would have to be real STEALTH judges. Bush would be forced to appoint moderates. If so, he should pick moderate judges who are at least 80 years old, and let Leaky & Co. look like bigoted agists if they attack them.

Well, this is the largest conservative web site on the net. Look at our poll John, you're not wooing anyone, most of us vote in the primaries and there's nothing you can do to win us over. Get lost.

Minority judges, not moderates. They couldn't reject Clarence Thomas despite 57 Democrats.

MCCAIN ABSOLUTELY NOT A SOCIAL CONSERVATIVE
If McCain doesn’t even understand that foreign terrorists should NOT be given constitutional rights and due process, could even co-sponsor legislation that prohibits free speech 30 days before an election (McCain Feingold) and thus give the media MORE power to sway elections, and co-sponsored a bill (McCain Feingold) provisions of which were OVERTURED by the U.S. Supreme Court as violating the Constitution, then at best you have to say he doesn’t interpret the constitution strictly and at worst he is actively subverting our most basic civil rights. Either way, how can we trust him to make sound judicial nominations of strict constructionist judges if he can’t even interpret the constitution strictly himself?

1) McCain voted FOR federal funding for stem cell research
2) McCain voted AGAINST Federal Marriage Amendment
3) McCain is FOR constitutional rights for terrorists.

McCain said Alito wear his ‘conservatism’ in his sleeve, so he would NOT nominate a judge like him
