All of the hostages seized in a raid by gunmen on a Baghdad higher education facility have been released, Iraqi officials say. A government spokesman told the BBC that the hostages were freed in a number of police raids across the city.
Gunmen dressed in uniforms similar to those worn by Iraqi police abducted dozens of people.
Five top officers were later arrested - including the police chief of Karrada district where the abductions occurred.

I LOVE happy ends! :D
Although we all know this wasn't the last time we heard from stuff like this, it is nontheless great news.
I don't know the exact circumstance, and we certainly never will see fully through the jungle of corruption, militias and covert-ops, yet I'm glad that it turned out well.

CNN's header is running this line:
"State television Iraqiya reports that most of the hostages abducted from a Ministry of Higher Education building in Baghdad have been freed."
"most"?

When CNN says "most" it means "surplus" in reality.
To: jmc1969
So the "police" kidnapped them and the "police" freed them?

Thank You, God.
Anyone care argue whether or not the Iraqi police are ready to stand on their own? Hmmmmm?
This is more evidence the Rumsfeld plan was/is a good one.

Obviously the release was a direct result (not) of harsh rhetoric from the DemocRATs that "We're not kidding, you better release those guys now, or else"!

Anyone care argue whether or not the Iraqi police are ready to stand on their own? Hmmmmm? Well, if they kidnapped the people to begin with, the answer to your question is: NO!

Apparently militia-loyal policemen abducted them, and loyal policemen freed them and arrested 5 policemen involved.
Sounds like a little clean-up of the police. A good step, yet far more has to be done.

The perps didn't realize they were being like Russian nihilists, but once informed they decided they didn't really want to destroy the state after all.
