PHOENIX -- Democrat Harry Mitchell's lead over Republican Rep. J.D. Hayworth increased as elections officials continued to count ballots Monday in the 5th Congressional District race.
Mitchell had a total of 88,302 votes, or 50 percent. Hayworth had 82,485 votes, or 47 percent, according to the Secretary of State's office, which continues to compile early and provisional ballots.
Libertarian Warren Severin had 5,578 votes, or 3.2 percent.
The Associated Press called the race for Mitchell last Tuesday.
Hayworth has not conceded the race. Elections officials say it will take several days to finish counting the more than 100,000 ballots that remain.
Meanwhile, Mitchell continued to organize a congressional transition team as he spent a second day at an orientation session in Washington, D.C., for newly elected Democratic members of Congress.
Arizona's 5th District includes Scottsdale, Tempe and parts of Chandler, Mesa and Phoenix.
Thats correct the numbers I have seen show a gain for Hayworth who was losing on election night by about 7,500 votes. The gap has closed and I think he has better than a 50/50 chance of winning.
Have you seen any polls on the public's support of illegal immigration/open borders?
Don't confuse anyone with the facts, please. :)
Do you know what the polls showed on American voter support for closing the borders in Arizona?
no , please share ?
That is just what muslims are doing. They arrive here or in the U.K. and heave a sigh of relief that they have found freedom and prosperity compared to the hell hole they left under Islamic rule. Then they prepare to start the cycle of Islamic rule in their new location. They are never smart enough to comprehend that Islam is the cause of the problem. Volunteering to be the mobile bomb of the week ensures there is no cultural memory left behind to comprehend the cause and effect.
See my post above.
Thanks. This is so depressing, he was a good congressman. If only he'd run for Governor instead... we'd still have him, I'm certain he would have won the state no problem.
Hayworth conceded.
I'm gonna be watching Harry Mitchell like a hawk. Although he looks like a doddering old fool, he's a dumbocrat so he's not exactly harmless.
Good idea. Yes, we have to watch the guy. See just how much he spun the truth in this election.
Thanks for the notification. Sad to see JD go.
You know, he taught history for many years at Tempe High. I would watch him as well.
