Best Buy Bans Use of Merry Christmas In Advertising

Best Buy has announced they will be using "Happy Holidays" this coming Christmas shopping season, and they will not be using "Merry Christmas."

Dawn Bryant, a spokeswoman at Best Buy Co. Inc., says their advertising will not be using the term "Merry Christmas." "We are going to continue to use the term holiday because there are several holidays throughout that time period, and we certainly need to be respectful of all of them," Bryant said. "Plus Walmart ranks Christmas right up their with Kwanzaa. What's next...Festivus at Walmart??? I'll stick with Best Buy."

Really? I must have missed how the statement from Best Buy regarding "several holidays" shows a different perspective.

The message about shipping and the date of "Dec. 24" that you referenced simply indicates that Best Buy wants to make money off of Christians and military families without daring to recognize the name of the holiday. Walmart apparently doesn't consider Christmas to be a four letter word though. It would be nice if Best Buy's management felt the same way.

All except CHRISTmas, you mean.

I am buying all of my Kuanzaa gifts at Walmart. I like my local Walmart because of the stench and filth. I am guessing they use an specially formualted aerosol spray.

Ha ! Try LCD TVs.

Two days before Christmas last year I bought a 32" LCD HD TV (Sony) at Circuit City - our Christmas present to ourselves. I opened it upon arriving home and plugged it all together - nada. No power, nothing. I called the store, they said bring it back. I drove the 26 miles back to the store, and was given another one in exchange, the last one they had in stock. I drove the 26 miles home, removed it from the box and plugged it all together. Would you believe - this one turned on, but all the controls were dead. Couldn't change channels, set up the settings, change the volume, nothing. I called the store again - they were incredulous and said, well, bring it back. Again. I drove back there the next day, another 26 miles, on Christmas Eve. By now I'm really steamed because I had a housefull of company coming later that afternoon and had a lot to do. They set it up and confirmed it was defective. Since they didn't have another one, and because I had had so many problems, they gave me a better TV and gave me a credit for the cost of the extended warranty on top.

A year later, it's still working. I got a better deal, but it cost me about 6 hours of my time.

We may be getting cheaper goods, but it's only cheap in nominal price.

How is genericizing all of them being respectful to all of them?

So maybe Best Buy won't have to put on extra help during their "Happy Holidays."

I guess I'll be buying my Christmas stuff at Circuit City this year. I was getting sick of the Best Buy clerks "hawking" magazine subscriptions and other junk at the check out any way.

In what way is the use of "Merry Christmas" disrespectful?
