McCain Starts Planning for 2008 Run

Sen. John McCain, considered the front-runner for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, intends to launch an exploratory committee next week, party officials said Friday.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to avoid pre-empting a public statement from the four-term Arizona senator.

McCain, the Republican maverick who unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination in 2000, already has opened a bank account for the committee, officials said.

"The senator has made no decision about running for president," said Eileen McMenamin, a McCain spokeswoman.

Aides to McCain say the senator will discuss a presidential bid with his family over the end-of-the-year Christmas holiday.

McCain, 70, is a former U.S. Navy pilot who was a prisoner of war in Vietnam. He was elected to the Senate in 1986, and served in the House of Representatives for four years before that.

I don't want him. What are your thoughts?"""

Let me count the reasons, and I cannot do it in chronological order:

1. He was part of the Savings and Loan Scandal, the Keating 5 or &(?) or whatever. That mess cost the US taxpayers millions of dollars, and McVain was up to his pointy little ears in it. Somehow he weaseled out, and I suspect because of his POW status he got a pass or not much more.

2. He is already rather old for the job of President, which whipsaws everything out of you, and more so in today's terrorist world. (Thank God GWB is as fit as he is- and he hasn't ducked taking a physical, like Clinton). I want a kealthy candicate to keep Republicans in the office. His face balloons in and out with the effects of his cancer. I don't wish the big C on anyone, really nasty stuff, but I wonder just how far that has spread on and IN his head? Sometimes, I think it is seriously affecting his thinking.

3. I don't think he is a true Republican. He waffles in and out of wearing that hat. I want a more steady course for my candidate. Not ready to vote for a woman, either, and I am one.

4. I absolutely don't trust him. I think he is a ego-maniacal little person, who has skated on the coattails of his POW status for far too long. I am truly sorry he had to go thru it. BUT:::: Time for him to put on his "big Girl Panties" and deal with life. How long can he be a one trick pony?

5. Too many stories about his quick temper. There has to be thoughtful decisions made in the White House, and I don't think he can rein in his temper consistently.

6. He thinks he has "earned" the nomination because of basic seniority. We all have seen seniority in our workplaces. Sometimes it is just pitiful, and lots of those persons are no longer really qualified for the job. Too many laws make it too hard to fire them, tho. I want the Republican candidate for 2008 to have more going for him than "seniority".

This isn't "SURVIVOR" and there isn't a mllion dollar check waiting for you after you have conived everyone else off the island.....

I will never vote for McVain. NEVER. Give me someone who has a position and sticks to it. Like Tancredo.

He's got my vote. I don't want Frist nor the others unless its Condi or General Powell.""

General Powell talked #41 and Schwartzkopf (SP) out of cleaning out Bagdad in the Gulf War. I think he has turned into a dove. We would not be in Iraq now and we would still have a Republican control of Congress if that hadn't happened.

It's a great pity that McCain is making a run for the '08 nomination because it precludes a run by Jon Kyl, who would be, in my opinion, the best candidate for the GOP next time around.

McCain as 2nd seat, ""

I won't vote for that, either, and I don't see Romney taking McVain in that set up, either.

Someone tell Johnny McVain that 2006 shows that we're tired of screwing around with liberal RINOs. If he wants to run so bad, tell him to switch parties so he can be Shrillary's running mate.

A McCain-Giuliani ticket could win all 50 states, beating Reagan and Nixon's record.

Rudy has been leading in all the polls going on two years now....even in a recent poll by conservative Iowa caucus voters. ....who know what Rudy's positions are.

At this point I wouldn't count out Romney but it's clearly Rudy's to lose.

I'm with you. I'm in AZ and I vote Libertarian when he's on the ballot.

The other thing to remember is he has a LOT of baggage and while the MSM will swoon over him while he's running in the Primary they will cut his head off in the General. The MSM is trying to sucker us in with their phoney polls showing him the Frontrunner.

I've heard Sonny Perdue of GA may be a dark horse..I don't think we've seen our candidate yet. I think that person is there but not currently in view.

agreed. meanwhile the MSM is trying (via NYTimes and BGlobe) to derail a Romney start. he won in MASS... as a republican. that's no small feat. they know it and it scares them. anyone they don't like, we should consider very carefully.

i believe the winning combination would be he and rudy. i'd say put romney on top and you get a lot of the female vote.

Straw polls are nothing more than a beauty contest. Doesn't mean he can win real polls once the long knives are unsheathed. He may be capable of winning, but it doesn't mean he will be a good president. MHO, he doesn't have the spinal capacity to be a good or effective president.
