Schwarzenegger Implores GOP To Follow Script of His Sequel: Court the Center
Washington Post ^ | Nov. 10, 2006 | John Pomfret

In his victory speech Tuesday night to a confetti-swamped crowd at the Beverly Hilton, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger had a message for the rest of the Republican Party after its worst defeat in decades.

Follow "the California way," he said. "We are proving to the nation that there is another way to go, a better path to solve problems."

Schwarzenegger's landslide victory in a largely Democratic state illustrates the growing power of moderate candidates and the electoral appeal of bipartisanship, and it could contain important lessons for Republicans and Democrats as they seek to position themselves in the future, analysts and politicians said.

"If I was a Republican National Committee chair, I would hire Arnold out and teach Republicans what is necessary to put together a winning campaign," said Sherry Bebitch Jeffe, a political analyst at the University of Southern California. "He really is the poster boy of what Republicans have denied for so long. Elections are won from the center."

Liberals are using Arnold's anomalous victory as a justification for the GOP to move Left. Thanks but no thanks.

Show me the statistics that said it was "Conservatives" that didn't vote.

Come on, FO. I've counted at least four times you have said that on this thread.

Give me a link to a primary source... I want to see the statistics that support your repeated contention.

Way too early to draw that kind of conclusion. This was a narrow loss with the odds stacked against us in an off-year. The conservative base will be back strong (unless the Republicans follow this Kennedy in-law's advice...)

What if you gain the whole world but lose your soul? Arnold's victory was meaningless. His victory diminished rather than strengthened the CAGOP. He did NOT run as a conservative here.

As I said, conservatives stayed home, even voted for the Dems

And the basis for this outrageous allegation is?

The facts are that only one, indentified Republican openly supported a Democrat. Schwarzenegger supported Garamendi by providing a quote to bash McClintock in blue country. That is a published fact.

Let's see the facts supporting the ludicrous quote above.

Your poorly sourced article talks about White Christian evangelicals and Roman Catholics, not political conservatives. Oh, and it says they DIDN'T stay home.

Pathetic.

Exactly. He stole and ran on their agenda. The reason liberals voted for him he could accomplish the things they want far better than a Democrat ever could. Its also why I did NOT vote for Arnold this past Tuesday.

Arnold did NOT raise taxes and vetoed the most damaging bills passed by the Dem Legislature. That is the best one can hope for...

Despite looming evidence that refutes both the first and second contention, your conclusion, that this is the best one can hope for, demonstrates what a defeatist position you have adopted.

People voted out the Republicans nationwide because they had become like the Democrats they ousted from power. The GOP moved so far to the Left you couldn't tell if it was a conservative party.

Republican voters didn't show up at the polls

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2006/11/10/BAGSJMA78G1.DTL

"California's Republican voters stayed home in droves on election day, as preliminary figures show voter turnout falling well below the state average in some of the most reliably GOP parts of the state.

Although the final totals won't be known for weeks, election day turnout in Fresno, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and SanDiego counties, which all have Republican pluralities, ran as much as 10 percentage points below the state's 44 percent average turnout.

"The turnout in Republican counties was low compared to the turnout in counties where Democrats hold the edge,'' said Patrick Dorinson, a spokesman for the state Republican Party. "The conservative Republican base didn't show up.''

Some 31 million Democrats turned out and only 25 million Republicans turned out. I guess facts really bother you, they interfere with your propaganda.

How did that happen, with only 6.7 registered million dems and 5.4 million registered reps? Gee, could you possibly be trying to distort things by quoting national stats when the subject was California's election? Like claiming "we" elected Pelosi, earlier?

I gotta hand it to you, FO. you've mastered about every form of logical fallacy and dishonest debate there is. One would almost think you do this professionally. Is there a spin doctor in the house?

Moderates are a fickle lot. They side with whatever is popular in the polls. I prefer principle to expediency and substance to an empty suit. In the long run, its more enduring.

The center in California IS the Left. That is where the Drive Bys/MSM and academic eggheads urge the GOP to move. It should shun the advice like the plague.

1. And contrary to forecasts that religious conservatives would stay away from the ballot booth, voter turnout resembled that of previous elections, the exit polls showed.

2. California's Republican voters stayed home in droves on election day, as preliminary figures show voter turnout falling well below the state average in some of the most reliably GOP parts of the state.

Having trouble keeping your story straight?

And still nothing about "...conservatives stayed home..."

I'm actually starting to feel sorry for you.

Whew! We were talking about California voters... then you switched to talking a national level. When asked for primary sources to support the contention that Conservatives stayed home, you post an article from an Australian news source talking about Evangelical Christians. Jimmy Carter is an Evangelical, IIRC.

Now... once again, do you have any primary source to support your contention that Conservatives stayed home in California?

That's California. If Arnold's approach to politics was the right way, CA Republican turnout should have been HIGHER, shouldn't it?

He did NOT run as a conservative here.

Not only did he not run as a conservative, he ran as a traditional Democrat, supporting spending increases, increased borrowing and increased taxation. Then he went to Mexico and announced that he was happy that Republicans lost control of Congress.

You bet we have a Democrat governor.

I believe in low taxes, limited government, individual opportunity and in a culture of life. I know those are the things that are the cornerstone of American conservative thought. We all subscribe to them. The question in what do Republicans liberals like Arnold believe in other than self-advancement, winning and cutting deals with the Democrats to further the liberal agenda? Cause as I see it, they don't have a philosophy.
