Key Republican joins Dems opposing Bolton nomination (WHY DID GOP WASTE ONE DIME ON CHAFEE?)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- This is probably not what President Bush had in mind when he stressed bipartisanship after the Democratic Party's midterm elections sweep.

A key Senate Republican has joined Democrats in opposing one of Bush's initiatives for the lame-duck Congress: John Bolton's nomination as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

With leaders from both parties promising a new bipartisan Washington, Bush began efforts to get two of his most controversial decisions approved before the Democrats take over.

. . . .

But Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee, who was defeated in this week's election, said he would block Bolton's nomination.

Chafee, a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, told reporters that he did not believe Bolton's nomination would move forward without his support.

"The American people have spoken out against the president's agenda on a number of fronts, and presumably one of those is on foreign policy," the Rhode Island moderate told The Associated Press.

"And at this late stage in my term, I'm not going to endorse something the American people have spoke out against."

The committee, dominated 10-8 by Republicans, requires a majority vote to send the nomination to the Senate floor. A tie would be the same as a no vote.

. . .

Bolton's appointment will expire in January unless the Senate confirms him, and the probable next chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee says approval is unlikely.

"I see no point in considering Mr. Bolton's nomination again in the Foreign Relations Committee because, regardless of what happens there, he is unlikely to be considered by the full Senate," said Democratic Sen. Joe Biden, who is set to become the committee's chairman and control the agenda in January.

Let's say there are 1000 voters.

500 are democrats
500 are republicans

If voter turnout was 40%, that means 400 out of the 1000 voted. Which means 200 of each party roughly. 200 / 500 = 40% of Republicans voted, and 200 / 500 = 40% of democrats. Don't quit your day job.

Yes, its 20% EACH but that doesn't mean 20% of REPUBLICANS that could vote, voted. 40% of republicans that could vote, voted.

My thoughts exactly. I'm in NH and we lost Charlie Bass and Jeb Bradley, not perfect Repubs but far from the RINO that is/was Chaffee. I think the 6 million wasted on Chaffee could have been better spent.

WHY DID GOP WASTE ONE DIME ON CHAFEE?

Because they cared far more about hanging on to power than advancing a principled, conservative agenda.

I didn't miss the lack of help from either Senator. Sanatorium suffered from supporting and campaigning for Specter over Toomey and this is the thanks he received.

Graham is up in '08 -- kick him out in the primary.. start now. McCain is running for President, but his term in Senate runs four more years. Run Allen again Warner in the VA primary.

Bush doesn't owe the conservatives squat.

If he'd act like a conservative, and if congress acted conservative, they wouldn't have gotten their rear ends handed to them.

I never was of the opinion, before the election, that we should toss out the R's 'just to teach them a lesson'. However, now that they are tossed...I hope they're getting it loud and clear.

I would suggest he resign just before the next recess and then Bush can give him another recess appointment.

Chafee got the boot by the voters. He is gone come Jan.

He even wrote an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal or NY Times (can't remember which) complaining about losing and blaming the voters. It was funny and yet sad to read. But exemplified the liberal elite attitude toward their entitlement to positions of power.
