Rush Limbaugh has it wrong. He stated Wednesday that "[c]onservatism did not lose, Republicanism lost last night. Republicanism, being a political party first, rather than an ideological movement, is what lost last night." (here) This statement a statement echoed by Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck and other conservative pundits to whom a nation of shell-shocked conservatives turned for cathartic analysis fails a simple test. If the electorate was demanding conservatism, then why did strong, principled conservatives lose? Incumbent conservatives such as Rick Santorum, George Allen, J.D. Hayworth and Curt Weldon to name a few. Superb conservative newcomers such as Ken Blackwell and Michael Steele.
The actions of the electorate last Tuesday was an indiscriminate firing of Republicans, not a thoughtful weeding out of RINOs. It is true that Republicanism lost on Tuesday, but it lost in all its forms and that included the exact form of strong, clear conservatism that the movement desperately needs.

I've often thought we should preclude those trained as attorneys from public office, since it is such an obvious conflict of interest. Our representatives should be allowed to have attorneys on their staff, but no attorneys should be elected to public office. It's good to find someone else who shares my view.
"They can't raise taxes - it won't fly with the blue dogs (you really think they will repeal the GOP created 10% bracket on taxable income up to about $16K and raise taxes on the "working poor" by $800 a year??? No.)."
Er ... a tax hike is in their *100 hour plan!*
Late campaign scandal
NO, here's why:
The only thing he forgot was closing Iraq's borders.
"Logic Times" = zero credibility.
Because there were no Conservatives Campaigning on Conservatism??
And those who were Conservative were hiding their principles.. (Cough Allen)
Call me stupid and lets go forward. We have 2-years to get us back on track.
God Bless America,
MaxMax.
Let me see.... Steele -- Maryland is certainly a conservative state. Blackwell -- Ohio's Republican's were the epitome of purity. Santorum -- Bob Casey was a completely Liberal opponent. George Allen -- James Webb is a liberal who hates Ronaldus Magnus. J.D. --- lost.
NOT!!
They want the "inevitable" Hispanic vote.
Voter fraud had a lot to do with close races. Until voter fraud is investigated and prosecuted, this will keep happening.
You are right I will add that our dear governor did everything she could to derail his campaign also. I am anxiously awaiting the counting of the absentee ballots. I believe that the good ole GOP put their money in the wrong places in Arizona.
[i]We lost because the experts in selling stuff, the MSM lied about the war since the day it began.

That's ALWAYS been the case, and that is always going to be the case... If we want to win, we can't complain about it... We just need to overcome it through a more effective articulation of the policies we support and the truth of the facts on the ground.
Unfortunately, THAT'S what this administration has lacked for 6 years.
In the end, when the people understand WHAT the goal is, they will support it... "Stay The Course" worked for the 2004 election... You don't get to use something that squishy twice. We won in 2004 despite it, which gave us 2 years to come up with a BETTER message or strategy that resounded with the people. We didn't. We lost.
I understood why the President and the Republicans were defensive in his first term... The election of 2000 clearly didn't give him a mandate for ANYTHING... BUT, almost exactly 2 years ago, President Bush after winning re-election said "I now have political capital, an I intend to spend it."
Well... Can anybody tell me what he spent it on??? Because that aggressiveness seemed to leave him after his second inaugural.
Not if McPain is our standard-bearer.
He tried to spend it on Social Security reform. However it was such a non sexy issue that even the base was not enthused. Which is sad because its a real problem
If Bush gets his amnesty for illegals, the GOP may face a long dry period before they ever get control of either Chamber. It make take them decades to ever get control again.
As I understand it the RINO's lost half their members on Tuesday, so the GOP has been moved to the right. If we are to believe what they say, a great many of the new Dems are more conservative than the old Dems. So if the Dems are more conservative and the GOP is more conservative, how is this a defeat for conservatism.
Allen fumbled the macaca remark and got caught in the Webb of mud-slinging and personal attacks.
Plus, Northern Virginia (especially the parts inside the Beltway) and Charlottesville...are rabidly left-wing now.
I took this to be strategic statement, which the President later tried to explain [indicating that was not the case for tactics]. But your average voter doesn't understand the difference, and with the MSM against him and not willing to explain it, this statement was a huge negative for Republicans. The public can't be addressed with the same terminology used when meeting with the Sec. of Defense.
Yeah, these guys fight each other in the day and drink and play cards with each other after hours. Congress is a conspiracy of lawyers.
