Their voters aren't going to tolerate them turning into NWO nutcases. And they know it.

Not necesarily. The voters don't know how their congressmen vote or where they stand on so-called "issues." Many cannot even name their congressman. Many times all it takes to win is to have a recognizable name.

If we go very far in that direction, we're saying there is no marketplace of ideas, that voters are plastic objects to manipulate and that any policy that wins is the right policy. It's tempting to think this but this year's election instead demonstrates, I think, that the voters are perceptive. They perceived that Republicans had scandals and wild spending and ran the debt up. In short, too many Republicans were corrupt liberal types. So given the choice between GOP liberals and Dim liberals, they opted for the real thing: Democrats.

Well, I just don't subscribe to thinking the voters are utter morons and that our policies don't matter. I often say the voters aren't dumb, they're just crazy. But deep down, I believe that voters do want a fairly lean efficient government that is less intrusive into business and personal affairs. I think this is a center-right country, fairly conservative in general outlook but with a schizophrenic streak on some social issues.
