Allen is probably taking the Thune route. Go with class, and he can have the Warner seat in 2008. Otherwise, he's done in national politics forever.

The Senate was designed to be the Congress' sea anchor. It's the Dems' turn to learn this lesson.
SEN. BURNS CONCEDES MONTANA RACE
HELENA, Mont. - U.S. Sen. Conrad Burns (news, bio, voting record) conceded defeat to Jon Tester on Thursday, acknowledging that a tight election had gone to the Democrats' favor, Burns' campaign told The Associated Press.
Burns, a three-term senator whose campaign was troubled by verbal gaffes and voter discontent, congratulated Tester, a farmer and state legislator.
"I stand ready to help as Montana transitions to a new United States Senator," Burns said in a statement provided to the AP. "We fought the good fight and we came up just a bit short. We've had a good 18 years and I am proud of my record."

I guess military votes don't count to some people anymore. What a loser.

The margin is likely not within the parameters for a state funded recount. We're not Gore/Lieberman.
What about the military ballots?

Wow, were there really still 21K military votes to be counted?? Even at 55% of those votes (which is probably well on the low side) Burns could have picked up at least 2,000 or so votes there. If he's conceding with 21K uncounted military votes that is really nuts.
Can't we actually wait three days to find out?
Time to build up the threat of armed American militias again. Those were the good ole days.
Not a good day, though not unexpected. Burns has announced he will concede and Allen is still waiting for the vote canvas totals to be announced sometime this afternoon in Virginia, unless there is a serious narrowing, he will concede.
Typical. That's why the phoney conservative party lost. This is a defeat of the party that wanted so bad to be loved and embraced by leftists that it compromised the values of its grass roots supporters and tried to look as much as possible like the opposition. But the voters said, "Hey, if we want Democrats, we'll vote for them!" And they did.
Real sucky day and week so far. But we have to keep our chins up and go on. Looking forward to 2008 now. Now we can sit back and watch the Dems screw up!

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Conrad Burns conceded defeat to Jon Tester Thursday morning, acknowledging that a tight election had gone to the Democrat's favor, Burns' campaign told The Associated Press.
Burns, the three-term folksy backslapper undone by some verbal gaffes and voter discontent with Iraq, corruption and President Bush, congratulated Tester.
``I stand ready to help as Montana transitions to a new United States Senator,'' Burns said in a statement provided to the AP. ``We fought the good fight and we came up just a bit short. We've had a good 18 years and I am proud of my record.''
Burns did not plan any public appearances on Thursday, his campaign said, instead conceding in a release that thanked supporters.
``For 18 years, Montanans trusted me to hear their concerns, help solve their problems, and made being a United States senator from Montana the best job anybody could have,'' Burns said. ``I will forever be grateful to this state for that honor and proud of my accomplishments.''
Burns, 71, did not give any indication of what he planned to do now, other than saying ``I hope there is still a good-sized buck out there, because I am going hunting.''
Burns should have conceded in the spring and montana would be sending a republican to washington.
The brilliant karl rove must have been busy with the plame case.
Rehberg waited until the filing deadline to announce for the house. He was waiting for burns to step aside.
Couldn't Karl have showed him polling with his negatives through the roof and tester beating him in head to head matchups.
They could have offered burns agriculture secretary and have kept johanns in nebraska.

I'm certain this has been looked at upside down and inside out by people with access to more data than we have. The Republicans did a lot of stupid things to blow this election, but I doubt they want to kneecap themselves for '08 by dragging this out.
