President Bush yesterday said he will team up with Democrats to pass an immigration bill with a guest-worker program that his own party blocked this year, and his Republican opponents predicted a bloody intraparty fight but said they cannot stop such a bill from passing.
"We will fight it, we will lose. It will go to the Senate, it will pass. The president will sign it. And it will happen quickly because that's one thing they know they can pass," said Rep. Tom Tancredo, Colorado Republican and chairman of the House Immigration Reform Caucus, who had led the opposition to a guest-worker plan. "I am absolutely horrified by this prospect, but I have to face reality."
Mr. Bush supported a bipartisan majority in the Senate this year that passed a broad immigration bill including a new worker program and citizenship rights for millions of illegal aliens. But House Republicans blocked those efforts, calling them an amnesty, and instead forced through a bill to erect nearly 700 miles of fencing along the U.S.-Mexico border.

I'm not quite sure how much farther to the left he can move on this issue. Illegals (the ones that aren't already voting illegally) will present a supermajority for the liberals since they fit perfectly within the demographic description of a democRAT. They are predominantly low-skilled freeloaders, living off the taxpayer-funded benefits just like the rest of the democRATS.
One of the results of the Republicans trying to "make nice" with the enemy is that the Republicans have given up the majority.
ouch!
I didn't write that -- follow the thread up one.
You can count me in.
I'm real glad that message was sent to the republicans.
What a great message to stab in the back the congress that blocked bush's amnesty.
So now we have amnesty and the dems will block conservative judges.
This is a great lesson in being careful what you wish for.
Some conservatives said what is the big deal losing the house for two years. But that sentiment also took down the senate.
If you look at the 08 election I see very few seats changing back. Gop districts are far less partisan than dem districts. Those new members will stay no matter what pelosi does. They can vote against bills with the majority they have now and pick off some rinos.
Sending a message will give pelosi leadership for a decade.
It took 12 years for the dems to get back the house.
Be careful what you wish for a message can turn into a long national nightmare.
Now looking at the senate I don't see two pickup oppurtunities. We will be even in a worse situation defending red seats in blue areas.
This was bush's last chance to get judges through committees. Ted Kennedy will tie up all of bush's judges the next two years.
Conservatives that stayed home in virginia and montana didn't think about the judiciary.
If Allen and Burns had high turnout in conservative areas they would have won.
Oh, sorry. Most folks use italics for quotations. My apologies, though.
This is an outrage. The country is being destroyed, filled with people who do not respect its ideals. This amnesty is a betrayal of the first order.
I'm horrified, too. I strongly believe that if action had been taken against ILLEGALS, we would have held on because the base would have known their reps would have been responsive to the will of their constituents.
Sadly, if he does this, whatever good the man has done will not be remembered, and this will end up one of the biggest parts of his "legacy".
Boy, those "real conservatives" who decided to stay at home to "teach the Republicans a lesson" sure showed us, huh?
I hope they all note what happens when REAL liberals take over Congress.
I think IF Senate had passed strong immigration policy before the election it may not had turned out this badly!
I am in Italy right now and they are commenting on our elections.Their comments are that we lost because of the Iraq war.
In England the Conservative Party is passing very STRONG Immigration policies against all illegal immigrants and putting a cap on all immigrants entering their country while our country allows anyone to enter with no caps, big mistake!
Here in Italy I only get to see about 3 TV shows in ENGLISH
everything else is in Italian. Newspapers are in Italian.
I liked London because everything there was in english.
We get CNN international here in english.
Euro's here in Italy are better than the pound.
Quite costly in both countries.
If anyone else on FR knows of some anti-amnesty winners, please list them. We just may have a fighting chance of defeating GWB's dangerously misguided love affair with criminals. Of course, Pence is running for minority leader, and he favors an amnesty-in-disguise plan. We must be vigilant!
Regards . . . Penny
interesting.
If the 86 amnesty can be an example of what will happen in the future, another amnesty will not only be granted to those that reside here illegally. Any and all illegals that enter before the filing deadline regardless of whether or not they crossed the day before or five years prior will be granted amnesty.
That will surely endear him to conservatives. NOT
Your analysis/comments are excellent.
