RECOUNTS [Byron York]
Unless something unforeseen happens, we're looking at a recount in Virginia, where the law calls for a state-paid recount if the difference between candidates is one-half of one percent or less.
According to numbers on the Virginia State Board of Elections website, Webb and Allen are separated by 8,359 votes, out of a total 2,361,441 cast a difference of about one-third of one percent.
The situation is different in Montana, where Burns and Tester are separated by 3,113 votes out of 341,891 cast.
There, the recount standard is one-quarter of one percent, so if those totals hold up, a state-paid recount is unlikely. Posted at 8:26 AM
Because the numbers o liberal-tarians in the GOP are negligible--almost irrelevant. There just happen to be a lot of you on Free Republic
There are 21K absentee ballots in MT per the link a few posts above yours. In a race of less than 2000 votes, that definitely keeps the door open.
IMHO Lieberman will NOT declare that he will vote with the GOP, NO MATTER what they offer him.
It would be POETIC justice however, if HE DID, and we then keep the Senate at 50-50!
That would be an AMAZING development!!
Republicans that stayed home or voted dem, have blood on their hands.
I didn't say libertarians were the core of the party for goodness sake. They provide a margin in close races like last night.
Without both factions in a divided electorate it is hard to win.
I am not a libertarian.
I made an observation about what happens here. So why so nasty to me?
Are you suggesting that anyone who is not a religious conservative is a libertarian?
and is this a religious conservative forum? Or a conservative forum?
YOu mean nobody who is not religious can be a conservative?
I mean this is a religious conservative forum. Not just a conservative forum, since often religious social issues, in this forum, are much more important to people than economic conservative issues (although that is not to say liberal economic issues ae welcome).
Quite frankly, if you are more libertarian you are closer to me political than many people. However, I have learned to stop bringing up the more 'libertarian' issues for discussion here and just focus on social issues where there is broad agreement.
I made an observation in response. Why so whiny?
That's true. I think the core of this board is social issues. That is where the passions are. Economic issues often take a backseat.
We have a better chance with Ben Nelson than Lieberman IMO.
You don't have to be a libertarian to want smaller, less intrusive government. That issue has broad appeal. It's what swept the GOP into power 12 years ago, and the loss of that ideal is what enabled to Dems to sweep us back out.
Lieberman has said he's a dem and will be staying dem in his acceptance speech last night. He's not switching.
I think he means that anyone who is not a evangelical Christian or an orthodox Jew cannot be a "true" conservative.
It's just so hard for me to understand how this could happen in Virginia!
Nancee
Well, yeah, since the dems are probably going to be in charge in the Senate. The repubs don't have anything to offer him now.

What do you mean by "of course"? Most states count the absentees along with the regular ballotts, whlie others count them only later. Do you have info that Montana is in the later category?
I believe that's what Jeffords did, and according to the Dems, switching parties immediately after the election is a "profound act of courage" so they would have no beef.
