I was checking it on CNN then I said to myself I better check Fox and it was about the same for both. Disappointing to say the least!
There will be a recount at the state's expense.
It's ironic that the likely Senator-elect Webb now finds himself precisely in the position of the 1974 Watergate Democrats that he has lambasted over and over again throughout the years.
As Senator Webb wrote in the Wall Street Journal on April 28, 2000:
"The humiliating end result of the communists' final offensive in early 1975 is usually placed on the shoulders of a supposedly incompetent South Vietnamese military. Little mention is made of the impact our "Watergate Congress" had on both its inception and success. This Congress was elected in November 1974, only months after Nixon's resignation, and it was dominated by a fresh group of antiwar Democrats. One of the first actions of the new Congress was to vote down a supplemental appropriation for the beleaguered South Vietnamese that would have provided $800 million in military aid, including much-needed ammunition, spare parts and medical supplies.
This vote was a horrendous blow, in both emotional and practical terms, to the country that had trusted American judgment for more than a decade of intense conflict. It was also a clear indication that Washington was abandoning the South Vietnamese even as the North Vietnamese continued to enjoy the support of the Soviet Union, China and other Eastern bloc nations. The vote's impact was hardly lost on North Vietnamese military planners, who began the final offensive only five weeks later, as the South Vietnamese were attempting to adjust their military defenses.
Finally, the aftermath of Saigon's fall is rarely dealt with at all. A gruesome holocaust took place in Cambodia, the likes of which had not been seen since World War II. Two million Vietnamese fled their country -- usually by boat -- with untold thousands losing their lives in the process. This was the first such Diaspora in Vietnam's long and frequently tragic history. Inside Vietnam a million of the South's best young leaders were sent to re-education camps; more than 50,000 perished while imprisoned, and others remained captives for as long as 18 years. An apartheid system was put into place that punished those who had been loyal to the U.S., as well as their families, in matters of education, employment and housing. The Soviet Union made Vietnam a client state until its own demise, pumping billions of dollars into the country and keeping extensive naval and air bases at Cam Ranh Bay."

Allen is done if he cant win the va senate race he cant win nationally. Best case for Allen is he wins on a recount and stays in the senate.
Other options are Pawlenty from Minnesota or Steele from MD.

That's my question. Is Webb enough of a conservative to do what is right by us or do you think he will get pulled over to the left and say what the hell.

It's been a good ride, i'm saddened by the results, but the republic goes on. THe fact that allen lost by such a tiny margin is a testament to that man. The democrats threw everything they had at him, and even with that could only win by a few thousand votes.
I wish him the best and hope he goes onto something else that could help conservatives.
And, while I really don't want to rehash it over and over, it's important for the Allen naysayers on FR to remember.
1) He had EVERYTHING thrown at him from Webb, Soros, Moveon, Hillary, Dean, the DNC and the Main Scream Media.
2) He lost on a night when Republicans were losing EVERYWHERE. IOW, if you lost a seat in your own state, STFU.
3) We WON the marriage amendment by a significant margin.
4) VIRGINIA LOST NO GOP HOUSE SEATS!
The same people who are trashing Allen and Virginia this year are the same people who were trashing Kilgore and Virginia last year.
Forgetting all along last year that we WON two out of three statewide races and we held control of the General Assembly.
This is a hard loss. It shouldn't have happened. And heaven knows the Allen campaign made some signficant mistakes.
But George Allen does not stand alone amongst Republicans in this loss.
Your exactly right. I know its not kosher to say, but i hope allen tries again for some other office( say governor in '09), and runs a campaign like he did in '93.
Good points. I think Allen ran a poor campaign overall, but that in and of itself wouldn't have been enough to sink him.
Somebody upthread said it best--Republicans have to be twice as good to beat a Democrat these days. Every single mistake that Allen made was amplified a hundredfold by the Beltway media echo chamber and repeated again and again using the Goebbels "Big Lie" theory. Not to mention the "mistakes" that were manufactured. Anybody remember Allen verbally smacking down that reporterette who asked an insulting question about his mother's Jewish heritage? That got spun by the Compost into "Allen's ashamed of his mother being Jewish," and that lie got uncritically accepted by the media and rebroadcast worldwide.
"Macaca" was much ado about nothing. The racism charges at UVa thirty-five years ago were leveled by a veteran Democratic operative and anti-smoking activist in North Carolina, whose partisan past was conveniently ignored by the DBM--along with the (equally flimsy) accusations that Webb used to drive through Watts slinging the n-bomb at the locals. It's just maddening.
I think bringing up Webb's kinky pr0n in his novels was a tactical error. By that time, people were so sick of the campaign anyway that the last thing they wanted to hear was "see! Webb writes pr0n!" And to be honest, I think Allen should've pounded the issues a lot harder. Hell, maybe he did and the media never reported it.
I guess Larry Sabato now has a scalp to hang on his office wall next to his collection of bad toupees. God knows he worked his tail off to see Jim Webb elected.
