Good post, but you overlook one important point. The U.S. Treasury is now spending billions of dollars on things "off-budget" (including a big chunk of the military campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan). The bill for these things is eventually going to come due.

Not to be a pessimist, but the last time the bill for things of this sort came due, we got 1973-79 for our troubles.

Money spent on Iraq and Afghanistan is the cost of freedom.

Of course, the real tragedy - and I've been saying this for years - is that we didn't use the time after 9-11 to identify the real enemies of freedom: Islam, and the fifth column within the United States.

We should have purged those forces.

Heck - consider this for a moment folks. Look at these close races. How many Moslems are there in the United States? Five million? How many were swung by the votes of our enemies? The enemies of all decent people?

"Terrorism" and "Islamism" are hard to sell to stupid people (and most Democrats, independents, and "moderate" Republicans are stupid). We should have, right after 9-11, singled out Islam as the enemy and gone after it with all of our might.
