Your words are very wise. I am in quite the same position as you, being young and counting tonight as the first big political defeat - except I had to suffer through Her Highness claiming victory in 2000's Senate race! That was unpleasant. But given all the unlikeliness of our historic wins in 2000, 2002, and 2004, it was all but inevitable to run out of steam eventually. The biggest shame is that we could not get past Iraq and, IMO, pretty much squandered the last two years of political capital (except for the Supreme Court nominations - that was damn good). But you are right, there is only the future to look to, and we only damn ourselves by doing otherwise.

Had the Republican party listened to most of America and truly addressed the issue of illegal immigration instead

Will you all SHUT UP about that? Not ONE vote that matters hinged on that this year; it's not even on the RADAR in things people are concerned about.

Tonight, you are a prophet.

"I truly believe that tonight can be a lot like election night 1992. If we nominate a viable presidential candidate and embrace the notion of fiscal conservatism then election night of 2008 can be like 1994 all over again."

Its possible I suppose but 94 was very special. See the House check kiting scandal really blew up in the Dems faces. My Mom is a 4th generation Democrat voted straight Republican ticket that year, even sent her sample ballot from the Dems (with all the Democrats marked for her) whited out and hand written all Republican names and then wrote on it, "Here ya go ya bunch of worthless crooks, cash this check!" and signed her name. And then sent it to the Ohio Democrat committee registered mail. With I might add a very long and blistering letter.

I don't know if we got that kind of vitriol built up right now.

Everyone could understand "Rubber Checks" and everyone knew if they had pulled that crap at the very least their bank would have closed their accounts and maybe they would have gotten arrested.

So people could easily figure that one out.

Do you really think our chances have improved now to get more tax cuts????

We weren't getting any tax cuts these next two years anyway so nothing has changed.

The prospects of a further tax cut in 2008 depends on the GOP and if they can drop the "compassionate conservative" angle. If we nominate a viable fiscal conservative then the chances for further tax cuts are really good.

BTW, its the creation of new entitlements that had a large impact on depressing the base tonight. The brainchild of those entitlements has been the GOP.

Only the leftwing-nuts gave Rove the credit for Rathergate. The rest of us know it was the work of the 'sphere, with pride of place going to Buckhead.

"do you really think Burns has a shot with outstanding counties and precincts?"

Two of the biggest counties in the state have yet to report in full. They are Flathead and Galladin...and both went to Bush and the Republican congressperson in 2004 by very large margins.

I'm very optimistic.
