I'm a registered Republican. In the 2004 presidential election, I went to the same polling place, in NJ, to which I had gone for previous 25 years. The young gal, who seemed to "take charge" told me I was at the wrong place...that my name wasn't in her book.

Puzzled, I drove 3 miles to the county building. They, in turn, said I was correct, and sent me back to tell her that I must now vote by provisional ballot.

This young gal secluded me behind a cardboard privacy screen, and I proceeded to vote Republican. I folded the ballot. On the outside of it, was written, "If this is a primary election, you must check Republican or Democrat." Naturally, I left it blank. She saw it, and told me that I must show that I'm voting either Republican or Democrat. I explained to her that this was a "general election." She insisted it was a "primary" election!

We went round and round for several minutes. She got so angry and told me she wouldn't accept my vote if I didn't check a box. I threw up my hands, checked the box next to "Republican," and left.

Upon returning home, I called an election official who was livid. She said, "You know, we pay these people, we spend many hours training them, and this is what we get!"

I said, "Well, I'm assuming my vote won't count."

She replied, "Unfortunately, you're right."

What's wrong with putting an X next to the name of the person you're voting for, like we do in England?

Here in Washington State, even if we manage to pass an iniative (example; to repeal a tax), our legislators or activist judges overturn our decision. Very frustrating.

...your story needs a headline:

SMART INFORMED HEROIC CONSERVATIVE SHINES BRIGHTLY AT DARK CROOKED INTELLECTUALLY CHALLENGED VILLAINOUS DEMOCRAT RUN VOTING OUTLET.

WAY TO GO, toldyou!

WARNING: headline maybe a bit verbose and story likely to invoke conservative enthusiasm

That young woman at your polling place should be arrested and charged with fraud.

Hey it's NJ. How could you not take the NJ phone number with you to call and turn her in?

Please go back and demand your ballot back, fill it out and don't sign anything outside the ballot. If Mrs. Hildabeast Jr. doesn't agree, call the election board right there on a cell phone and turn HER ASS IN!!!!

PLEASE!

Just got back from the King county of corruption in the US: Hudson. Midday so pretty quiet and I was second to the booth.

I feeel haaaapy. Maybe a good shot with Tom Kean Jr. to give a head start to Menendez to prepare for his jail cell.
