Botched: Assessing the damage done to Democrats (by Kerry)
Newsweek via MSNBC ^ | November 4, 2006 | Susannah Meadows

Posted on 11/06/2006 6:07:22 AM PST by meg88

For the moment, at least, Kerry is simply radioactive among Democrats.

Publicly, some activists were still sticking by him. Mark Gorenberg, his former finance chair for California, told NEWSWEEK he would definitely be with Kerry if he ran in ‘08.

On the ground in New Hampshire, some activists who’d been open to him pre-blunder, were now shutting their doors and turning out the lights. “It’s not that this gaffe was so bad,” says Ann McLane Kuster, a prominent New Hampshire activist, “But it plays into all the traits he has that are out of touch, like using intelligence as a way to distinguish himself rather than compassion. The underlying joke wasn’t funny.”

Not surprisingly, the judgments were a little less diplomatic inside the Beltway. “There is not a Democrat in Washington who thinks John Kerry is a viable presidential candidate after last week,” says a longtime Democratic strategist (who isn’t working for one of Kerry’s potential rivals).

The strategist, who spoke freely and at length about Kerry on the condition of anonymity, says the gaffe reminds Democrats that he is politically inept.

'Among the donors and activists who like to win, this memory will last a long time. Remember, his entire candidacy is based on electability. And when that’s the basis of your candidacy, and you’ve already lost once, amateur hour doesn’t begin to describe John Kerry."

"And that’s without even getting into the personal animus towards the guy.”

All Kerry did was to remind the American people of exactly WHY they have been the minority party. He woke the sleepers up, is all.

I'm sure all those soldiers Kerry has slandered, wherever they may be, are smiling too!

How SWEET it must be for them that his undoing was yet ANOTHER attack on them by Kerry. I mean, you couldn't write it this way in a movie script, it would seem too RIGHT.

If he went down over some other issue, it wouldn't give the soldiers such a sense of justice. Kerry's Vietnam era smears were successful in part because there was no way for those on the ground to defend themselves at the moment; the 'John Cary" banner was a stroke of brilliance by some of those "stupid" soldiers who are a hundred times smarter than that priviledged A-hole who struts around like some hardened soldier who's fought numerous campaigns. He NEVER mentioned his military experience in his runs for Senator in Massachusetts (where people hate the military) unless it was in that preening, embarassing "I was there in the rice paddies..." way.

So sweet for the soldiers he's wronged...so very sweet, at last, for them...

Those pictures with the article are a scream.

You're right. In that one it looks like he's exiting the airplane while in full flight. If fact, if you carefully look behind him you can see Taraaaza's foot planted firmly on his back.

He is a political mannequin

I was going to add that he is the quintessential "Empty Suit" but I like your phrase better.

Kerry put down his fork. His meatballs lay in ruins.

As a fellow prisoner of Massachusetts, you can take some solace in the fact that, like his meatballs, his very raison d'etre, lay in complete ruins!

The Newsweek writer is lying through his teeth. Kerry's history of sneering at the average American is on record.

I am deriving a great deal of pleasure from reading your comments on Kerry, which articulate so well WHY I loathe him more than even the Clintons. At least Bubbah LIKES people, and Hillary at least has enough sense to keep her opinions on the military (which I am sure mirror Kerry's) private.

Like you, I am certain the "joke" was simply manufactured as an after-gaffe excuse. It isn't funny, and it makes no sense even a a criticism, because President Bush DID get a good education; in fact, he went to Kerry's alma mater!

No, Kerry spoke his real thoughts, and I for one am glad. Maybe he will remain in hiding for some time, and we will be spared his arrogant and offensive speeches.

If I could have anything for Christmas it would be the opportunity to walk up to Kerry at a fundraiser while CSPAN cameras cover the meet-and-greet live; as Kerry put his hand out to shake I would say, in a calm voice, with no hysterics, "You are an idiot."

The opportunity to debut the new John Kerry, the one who doesn’t get rolled. “I’ve seen the worst of what they throw at you, so there’s no hesitation on my part to know how to handle that or what to do,”

Well, he did say he was ready to kick ass all over the country, I just didn't realize he meant his own. *smirk*

I never said he had a chance at the nomination, but I'm sure he thought that he did.

But what could they have done? Muzzle him? He's a megalomaniacal elitist twit who is essentially unimpressed by what anybody thinks because he doesn't believe anybody to be capable of such an activity but him and his fellow elitists. They couldn't possibly have stopped him.

"I'm not sure his personality lets him see the ridicule, otherwise he'd have gone catatonic long ago."

To the contrary, I believe he deeply feels the ridicule because he is extremely insecure inwardly, as most snobs are, and reacts with arrogance. Arrogance is his means to deflect the pain of insecurity by placing blame for his inadequacies on others.

Jon Carry would never agree to perform a public gaffe, one that elicits monstrous ridicule and scorn from millions, at the request of another such as Hillary. That would force him to make a deeply personal and profound admission of his own worthlessness; something he has avoided all his life. It would be emotional suicide. I think he would prefer physical death, believing it brings an end to suffering at least (the hereafter is another matter).

Sorry, I'm still not buying your conspiracy theory. :-)

I'm partial to the dorky one of him behind the wheel of a firetruck. Hard to believe some Dems think he deserves a second chance for a run in 2008.
