Botched: Assessing the damage done to Democrats (by Kerry)
Newsweek via MSNBC ^ | November 4, 2006 | Susannah Meadows

Posted on 11/06/2006 6:07:22 AM PST by meg88

For the moment, at least, Kerry is simply radioactive among Democrats.

Publicly, some activists were still sticking by him. Mark Gorenberg, his former finance chair for California, told NEWSWEEK he would definitely be with Kerry if he ran in ‘08.

On the ground in New Hampshire, some activists who’d been open to him pre-blunder, were now shutting their doors and turning out the lights. “It’s not that this gaffe was so bad,” says Ann McLane Kuster, a prominent New Hampshire activist, “But it plays into all the traits he has that are out of touch, like using intelligence as a way to distinguish himself rather than compassion. The underlying joke wasn’t funny.”

Not surprisingly, the judgments were a little less diplomatic inside the Beltway. “There is not a Democrat in Washington who thinks John Kerry is a viable presidential candidate after last week,” says a longtime Democratic strategist (who isn’t working for one of Kerry’s potential rivals).

The strategist, who spoke freely and at length about Kerry on the condition of anonymity, says the gaffe reminds Democrats that he is politically inept.

'Among the donors and activists who like to win, this memory will last a long time. Remember, his entire candidacy is based on electability. And when that’s the basis of your candidacy, and you’ve already lost once, amateur hour doesn’t begin to describe John Kerry."

"And that’s without even getting into the personal animus towards the guy.”

This story never gets old to me. I haven't laughed this much since the Democrats shot themselves in the foot at the Wellstone Memorial/Convention.

"it plays into all the traits he has that are out of touch, like using intelligence as a way to distinguish himself rather than compassion."

Kerry using intelligence as a way to distinguish himself is akin to Hillary using sex appeal as a way to distinguish herself.

It simply doesn't compute.

They have known this for years, long before he ever became their Presidential candidate. They only have themselves to blame for the damage done.

LMAO! The entire premise of the Kerry nomination in 2004 is that he was the "electable" Democrat. Maybe his gaffe will help to elect fellow Democrats tomorrow. But judging by his party's reaction, they don't think he has brought them to that goal.

Poll: In Match-up Between Hillary and Kerry, Most Democrats Would Choose Suicide
Survey Spells Trouble for Dems, Pollster Says
A new survey of Democratic voters indicates that in a hypothetical match-up between Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) and former presidential nominee John Kerry, most Democrats would choose suicide over either candidate.

The poll, conducted by the University of Minnesota ’s Opinion Research Institute, shows Mr. Kerry drawing 21%, Sen. Clinton 18%, and various forms of suicide 61%.

“Throwing yourself in front of a speeding city bus” was the most popular means of suicide at 22%, with “jumping off the roof of a really tall building or bridge” coming in second at 17%.

According to pollster Rockwell Pritchard, the surging popularity of suicide bodes ill for both Sen. Clinton and Sen. Kerry as potential presidential candidates in 2008.

“It’s still very early, but even at this stage of the game the prospect of one of those two being nominated shouldn’t be making Democrats want to kill themselves in these numbers,” Mr. Pritchard said.

Reached at his home in Massachusetts , Sen. Kerry pointed out that while he did not do as well as suicide, he still polled higher than Sen. Clinton, adding, “That’s better than a sharp stick in the eye.”

But Mr. Pritchard was quick to throw cold water on Mr. Kerry’s upbeat assessment: “In a head-to-head match-up, a sharp stick in the eye beats Sen. Kerry by a two-to-one margin.”

So, what does this say about the people of the People's Republic of Massachusetts who keep electing Kennedy and Kerry?
Maybe we need to send troops?

“Publicly, some activists were still sticking by him.”

Good...but first they gotta' drag him out of the skunk-hole he's hiding in.... and then they gotta' figure out a way to get rid of the smell.

I was thinking the same thing, Dems fail to get the House and all the blame goes on Kerry!

Which means that within the past several weeks, Hitlery will have effectively destroyed any presidential aspirations Harry Reid, Mark Warner (not sure how, but his dropping-out was really suspicious) and sKerry. And when the GOP keeps the House and the Senate, Howie Dean will probably wind-up in a rubber room for the rest of his life.

His Senate seat is up in '08 isn't it? Hopefully, Kerry will say he is going all out for President and will not run for his Seante seat. Then, lose the primary and we can be done with his pompous @ss for good.
