Saddam could hang within 30 days

OUSTED Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein and two of his senior allies were today sentenced to death by hanging after an Iraqi court found them guilty of crimes against humanity.

If an automatic review of the death sentence fails, the former strongman will hang within 30 days.

Judge Rauf Rasheed Abdel Rahman ordered bailiffs at the Iraqi High Tribunal to force Saddam to stand before the court as, visibly trembling, the former strongman attempted to shout down the verdict.

“Make him stand,” barked Judge Rahman, as Saddam begged the guards: “Don't bend my arms. Don't bend my arms.”

A court official held Saddam's hands behind his back as Judge Rahman, shouting to be heard over the defendant's protests, declared: “The highest penalty should be implemented.”

Saddam was sentenced to death for his role in ordering the killing of 148 Shiites in the village of Dujail, north of Baghdad.

As he was led away, his arms still pinioned, Saddam declared: “Long live Iraq. Long live the Iraqi people. God is greater than the occupier.”

I was watching the sentence being announced on TV this morning and there was this guy (from the defense team I guess) protesting to the judge that someone else in the courtroom is laughing and 'chewing gum'. The judge had to pause for a moment. I couldn't help but to laugh. There is this historic moment with the judge reading the sentence, and someone interrupts him to complain about a chewing gum!

I saw this live on TV and I could see that the judge was very very irritated with that Clark report. I wonder what was in that report.

Before the session began, one of Saddam's lawyers, former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark, was ejected from the courtroom after handing the judge a memorandum in which he called the trial a travesty.

Chief Judge Raouf Abdul-Rahman pointed to Clark and said in English, "Get out."

Bhwhahahahaahah!

That was very funny. The judge does not speak English and was talking to Clark in Arabic, instructing him to leave the room. Clark didn't seem to follow what was happening, until the Judge spelled it out in sorta broken English 'out!'. Eventually bailiffs arrived to take him out.

Clark is a lawyer, so his argument is easily predictable if you've ever watched any criminal defense type in action: "my client didn't do it, and when he did it, he didn't know it was a crime. Plus, you are singling him out for prosecution because he is a [fill in the blank with the persecuted minority of your choice]. The defense will now call expert witnesses..."
