WASHINGTON The board of trustees of the nation's premier school for the deaf voted Sunday to terminate the appointment of the incoming president, who had been the subject of protests, the board announced.
The vote at Gallaudet University came after a daylong closed-door meeting that followed a month of protests by students and faculty members. Jane Fernandes, the school's former provost, had been selected in May to take office in January.

On May 1, 2006, Dr. Jane K. Fernades was selected by a mostly deaf Board of Trustees after combing through 21 applicants, narrowing them down to 6, and then the final 3. The Board of Trustees decided to select her and become the first deaf woman president for Gallaudet University. But nearly 70 to 80 percent of deaf students, faculty and staff didn't like who the Board of Trustees selected, and went on a 6 month, uh, temper tantrums that ended tonight with the Board terminanting her contract after being dragged through the mud, personal threats, stalking, name calling, conspiracy theories, not being deaf enough, not being fluent enough in signing, not social enough where she hardly says "Hi" to the campus community while as provost for 6 years at Gallaudet University. Yes. Read the article. She has been hounded because of political correct liberal "identity politics". In short she doesn't "define herself" by her deafness.
Liberals marinate themselves in a stew of entitlement seasoned with victimhood.

too accepting of "assimilationist" approaches to deafness such as cochlear implants, better hearing aids, and genetic research). Let me guess,... the students will not be inviting Rush.L to speak.
So identity trumps science for them, eh?

I actually did a study on that, being a Galluadet alumnus, that the campus is more liberal than conservative. Even Clinton was there to give a commencement speech for the graduating class of 1994.
http://kokonutpundits.blogspot.com/2004/10/gallaudet-univ-how-liberal.html
Over the years, it had become progressively more liberal. No kiddin. And what was their rallying cry on the campus of Gallaudet University?
with a deep and gravelly voice:
Oppression!
Audism!
Not fluent enough to sign in ASL.
Etc..
(make one up here)...

Hell hath no fury like the Deaf Community scorned, and they feel scorned if someone's not signing three counties away. Their jihad against the cochlear implant was so illogical as to be otherworldly! "It's genocide!" they screamed.
Imagine the very worst of the shrill, intolerant Left boiled down into a very few nasty, vindicative people who make it their life's work to make life miserable for those they disagree-with. Add a chip on their shoulder the size of Gibraltar, and you've got the Deaf Community.
To: TeleStraightShooter
They would rather live with their deafness and obtain all the perks of the disability than seek a permanent cure if one becomes available and have to make it in the real perkless world. Victimhood forever.

This story gives a whole new meaning to the term "Deaf and Dumb."

That place is weird.
Do they want these folks to think and act like they are from another planet?
"Hey, I can restore your hearing!"
"No, thanks, a$$hole! Deaf is better."
"Hey, I can make you blind if you want. That would be even better, I bet."

Believe or not, there are actually hearing people out there who want to become deaf...permanently. In fact, in one deaf forum a hearing guy came on to talk about this. Real psycho guy. He wanted nothing better than to poke some holes into his eardrums with a sharp object. But didn't want to do that...too painful. Instead, just listened to his iPod at a screeching volume hoping it'll speed up the process.
Should've suggested he take Oxycontin in mass dosages.
