How Disturbing (McCaskill/Talent Race turns nasty - thank you Michael J. Fox)

The race in Missouri between Jim Talent and Claire McCaskill took a disturbing turn last night. In the St. Louis market during the World Series, Michael J. Fox shot an ad on behalf of Claire McCaskill on the sole issue of stem cells.

The ad, which will probably now embolden the cut and run conservatives to run in droves to the polls, was both exploitative and manipulative.

The ad was perhaps too clever for McCaskill. It is an issue seen by many voters as being personal and non-political. Yet, McCaskill and the left have repeatedly pulled the issue into gutter politics and exploited the hopes and fears of many. This is just the latest example of the exploitation of life at the hands of the Democrats.

While there may be some momentary benefit for McCaskill, my sense is that voters who might have wanted to stay home and protest the GOP will become enraged enough to go vote and other voters will feel dirty enough from viewing the ad to vote against McCaskill. Sometimes emotional ads are just too raw for voters. This is one of those times.

In addition to the misleading statements (e.g., referring to Talent opposing "stem cell research" generically, as opposed to embryonic stem cell research, this sorry spectacle once again proves Ann Coulter's point about how the Democrats continually use a strategy of using advocates that cannot be attacked.

The problem with MJF's cause is that he strongly supports not stem cell research, but embryonic stem cell research. At least, that is my understanding.

The Bush Administration and Talent do not oppose stem cell research. 

The administration opposes killing babies for new stem cell lines for embryonic stem cell research.

MJF is apparently endorsing the act of killing babies to enhance his own life.

Michael J Fox is a Canadian and should keep his mouth shut about US politics even though his motivation was to get more government money for stem cell research.

I am so sick of Michael J Fox going in front of Congress, shakes his shaky hands and asks for more money of his disease. Next Chris Reeves is wheeled in front of Congress and he asks for more money for stem cell research and paralysis. Next is some skinny Hollywood bimbo goes in front of Congress and asks for more money for eating disorders. I turn on the morning Radio and Don Imus (is he married to Heather Mills McCartney?) is demanding Congress appropriate more more to study Autistic Children.

Does anyone detect a pattern? Once upon a time, the American Cancer Society would raise money for conducting research and funding prevention ads. Now the American Cancer Society raises money, hires lobbyists who advocate the government fund the research they use to do, or better yet, just have the US Government write the ACS a check and they'll do the research. They are many, many other charities who employ the same funding strategy, ie get the government to write them a big check. Look at your United Way Pamplets and Web Sites. Some will detail how they hire lobbyists with your money to advocate that your taxes be raised.

The only US government restriction is that no federal tax dollars are to go directly to embryonic stem cell research.

There is no restriction on or lack of money for private funded embryonic stem cell research here or abroad. One rich private foundation that is funding embryonic stem cell research is the Howard Hughes Medical Foundation. It has almost as much money as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

I've been polled twice this month on Amendment 2, once in connection with the Talent/McCaskill race, the other in connection with the local state representative race. In both cases, the pollsters have been told I'll be voting against the amendment, Missouri's constitution is fine just the way it is.

My local Congresscritter Wannabe is running similar ads (NJ-7) and Menendez is running ads on Stem Cells against Kean in the NJ Senate race. Clearly the Donks see this issue as a winner for them.

I also note that all these ads drop the word "Embryonic" from the description of the stem cells involved.

Frankly, I think they are wrong. The people already lined up to vote Donk will nod their heads over this, but it is not going to get them fired up. The 'Pubbie base, however, will get fired up over this.

Plus the fact that the ads are universally deceptive. Nobody has banned anything in this country with regards to Embryonic Stem Cell Research. The FedGuv isn't going to fund it, but that doesn't mean it can't happen. This is obvious unless you are afflicted with LibThink, and think that nothing at all can happen unless the FedGuv does it.

Yes, the basis of the issue is the expenditure of federal tax dollars for embryonic stem cell research.  Like the left, I failed to mention that important fact.

Isn't it interesting that nobody looks to Canada for medical innovation or new therapies? The Canadians are a well educated people, and their country is one of the richest in the World. But when was the last time anybody heard of cutting-edge medical technology being developed in Oh! Canada!?

The Canadians benefit greatly from being next-door to the greatest innovative economy the World has ever known. But if my neighbor is stealing lettuce out of my garden every day, I am not going to be impressed when he gives away salad for free.
