An organised group known as the Free Republic set out to bring the band down.
The organisation's power, she says, comes through the internet. The site has thousands of subscribers, all of whom were encouraged to destroy the band's music and boycott the radio stations that played it.
"It's scary how much power they do have," she says. "They can take down someone singlehandedly and I don't think Americans are aware of that.

I'm STILL iffed that I never got my "Official Free Republic Boycott the Dumb Cluckers" letter that Maines and her rep claim was sent out. Clearly, I'm not on the GOOD ping list, or something.

Yes, we all need to be placed in "reeducation" camps for daring to voice our opinions on the three hags.

That photo always gives me a laugh ... too bad the foil didn't keep that potato hot, lol.
What Miz Maines doesn't appear to realize, is that she has been successfully boycotted, due to her speech and actions. No matter how big a bogeyman she wants to make of Free Republic, that is the fact of the matter. She is responsible for wrecking that band's future, due to gravely offending the majority of their now-former fans.
I guess it's the "successful" part of boycott that has the left all atwitter? They're certainly a little too fond of the tactic themselves, to be criticizing.

Yeah, we're powerful, baby. Do you have a problem with non-violent protests and boycotts, Ms. Maines? Perhaps you would like to roll back the entire Civil Rights movement if you do?

The only think looking to take her down is probably a cheetah.

Maines said about Free Republic: "It's scary how much power they do have," she says. "They can take down someone singlehandedly and I don't think Americans are aware of that."
News flash to Ms. Maines: Free Republic is primarily comprised OF Americans. While it's true that FR's cast of thousands had much to do with the downfall of your 'band,' what ulimately brought your own downfall was yourselves.
Americans in general, regardless of party affiliation or ideology, do NOT take kindly to having their country repeatedly offended in only the way that you could have done.
Ms. Maines et al: You stepped in it -- now you clean it up. And in the meantime, stop your whining because most Americans could give a rat's ass about what you have to think or say (or sing for that matter anymore).

This is probably the closest I will ever come to getting mentioned in Page Six and on Oprah. ;-)
