WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) _ Muslims at the U.S. Military Academy numbered just two in 2001. This year, there are 32.
Now West Point has opened its first space dedicated to Muslims, a worship hall complete with a pulpit facing Mecca. The space officially opened Thursday.
"I knew the Army had a policy of religious tolerance, but I didn't know it was to this extent," said first-year Cadet Ahmed Moomin, 20, from the Maldives.
Until now, Friday prayers were held in an increasingly crowded first-floor office, said Imam Asadullah, the academy's Muslim cleric. The number of Muslim cadets jumped by 10 from last year.
The new hall is large enough for dozens of followers, he said.
West Point's Muslim leaders approached administrators last year for help.
"We live in a world where everyone is looking at the United States saying, 'You're anti-Islam.' But here at West Point, that's not what we do," West Point Chaplain Col. John Cook said.

Yes, we made it illegal. We wrote a law that was enforceable by our government, including the military. With regard to Islam, that law does not exist. If we want that law to exist, it is up to us to get it done.
There is a law that prohibits Communists from serving in our military. There is no law that prohibits muslims from serving in our military. You can preach all you want about the evils of Islam. You'll find no disagreement on this thread. But you still won't change the FACT that West Point has no legal justification to discriminate against muslims.
so you answer is "yes", we could exclude the candidate for being in Hamas.
so at least it appears you agree that these cadets should be investigated. after all, how are we supposed to find out if a particular cadet is in Hamas, unless we investigate them? what do we expect, he's going to write it on his west point application.
you are far more optimistic then I am - I would highly doubt that we are conducting any "extra" scrutiny on muslim applicants to west point - because that would be profiling. and its not politically correct to have that.
the bottom line is, these muslim applicants could well be AQ members (secretly of course, in the context of their private lives) - and we wouldn't have a clue.
That is what we have a Congress for.
They need to make one.
They already have been. You are clearly ignorant of the process, and I don't mean that as an insult. No one admitted to one of our military academies escapes intense investigation. You wouldn't believe the amount of screening that takes place prior to offering someone an appointment to a military academy. If we find a candidate is a member of a terrorist organization, he will most likely be thrown in jail. Hopefully forever.
we also have 40,000 police.
and after 9-11, the mosques and islamic centers were some of the places where those police were heavily deployed. absent that, there would have been incidents at those locations. and the media covered up alot of the real "street reaction" in these communities after 9-11.
You'd be surprised what we know. It isn't hard to track the history of an 18 year old kid. Especially one who must meet very high educational and extracurricular criteria. Not many teenagers can achieve a 4.0, score 1400 on the SAT's, become an Eagle Scout and student body president...and attend formal terrorist training at a Pakistani Madras.
Can't argue with that. That's what we put them in office for.
so every west point candidate has their phone tapped by the NSA - is that your claim? some white applicant from Texas has it done to him too, is that right? no way.
The NSA tracks phone calls from terrorist organizations. If 18 year old applicants to the Military Academy are using phones to communicate with terrorist handlers...we probably know about it. And yes, that would probably result in those candidates (muslim or not) not being admitted to West Point...among other things.

Obama seems to claim a lot of things. One claim is that he is a Christian.
However, his family on his father's side is Muslim. Once a Muslim, always a Muslim. I don't think they allow you to leave that religion. Alive anyway.
No argument.
How many Muslims do you know personally? Just curious.
Huh? Wha?
I have read here in Free Republic that if a Muslim converts to Christianity the Koran says he must be killed. I have read news reports of converts who were forced to go into hiding because they feared for their lives.
You feel this information is incorrect?
..and you better get use to it because there are a lot of posters on this site that insist on thinking with their balls instead of their brains.
In catching up on this particular thread, I see where Rokke has repeatedly made one simple request for legal justification which has repeatedly been ignored by the forces of ignorance and hate.
For the record, I despise the muslim religion but I've got sense enough to know that we are not at war with over a billion people.
At some point in any debate, if reasonable debate is to proceed, there has to be a point of agreement, no matter how far back you have to go. There IS NO SUCH POINT with these FReepers, only blind ignorance and hate.
