North Korean leader Kim Jong Il expressed regret about his country's nuclear test to a Chinese delegation and said Pyongyang would return to international nuclear talks if Washington backs off a campaign to financially isolate the country, a South Korean newspaper reported Friday. "If the U.S. makes a concession to some degree, we will also make a concession to some degree, whether it be bilateral talks or six-party talks," Kim was quoted as telling a Chinese envoy, the mass- circulation Chosun Ilbo reported, citing a diplomatic source in China.
Kim told the Chinese delegation that "he is sorry about the nuclear test," the newspaper reported.

Does anyone remember the scene in the Godfather when Don Corleone tells Micheal that whoever comes to him with the deal is the traitor? There is no freedom of the press in China. They do not suffer anonymous high level leaks. What ever China is saying about dear leader's remorse is intentionally put out there by the government for a specific reason. They are not a neutral party.
Didn't a Chinese envoy go there today and give him the WHAT FOR? Maybe they told him to butt out, or he'd be OUT.
According to the article, China pressured NK into apologizing for their nuclear detonation and prompted Kim jong il to promise he'll not detonate another bomb and will get back into a dialogue with the U.S. and the U.N. regarding the scrapping of their nuclear ambitions. I'd say that put the U.S.'s efforts to shame, probably because NK feared a strong economic and/or military response from China, while calling President Bush's bluff.
Looks like China slapped some hands -- if this is true.

UM....y'all don't know what kind of "back door" deals are going on....so all this after the fact guessing is really idiotic.
I agree. Just last night I was chatting with some friends in Soeul. I asked them if they were nervious their reply. "Oh it was only a 1 kiloton nuke" (to me that's like a bird saying it's only a 737 coming at us)
That being said, all of them were implying that China was meeting with the north koreans and referred to china as if it were the savior of the world.
China wants to have that 2008 Olympics -- and nothing will get in the way.
In fact, it wouldn't be suprising to learn that the RATS conspired with the enemy- they most certainly have the connections- to plan a script with our enemies in order to over through the government.
After all, Bush is their mutual enemy.

The delegation led by State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan met Kim on Thursday and returned to Beijing later that day — ahead of U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's arrival in the Chinese capital Friday. China is viewed as a key nation in efforts to persuade the North to disarm, as it is the isolated communist nation's main trading partner.
North Korea has long insisted that the U.S. desist from a campaign to sever its ties to the international financial system. Washington accuses Pyongyang of complicity in counterfeiting and money laundering to sell weapons of mass destruction.
The North has refused since last November to return to the nuclear talks, which also include China, Japan, Russia and South Korea. Pyongyang has sought bolster its negotiating position by a series of provocative actions, test-firing a barrage of missiles in July and performing its first-ever nuclear test Oct. 9.
Wouldnt it be ironic for Kerry and cBS to complain that Bush's UN stance is only angering North Korea
Oh please. This is like us claiming credit for reining in North Dakota if the governor there threatened to nuke Canada.
