Earthquake in Hawaii

I have to wonder if the nuclear test by N. Korea could have triggered the quake.

Completely absurd - it's sort of odd, there's a desperate desire for people to blame natural stuff on human actions - I think because it's scarier if stuff just happens on its own.

There are over THIRTY FIVE earthquakes a DAY as large or larger than the NK nuke test, many of them having occured closer to Hawaii than the nuke test.

And Hawaii has had a wide variety of quakes as large or larger than this one in the last 150 years, none of which were preceeded by North Korean nuclear tests.

The 1868 and 1975 earthquakes, the largest of Hawaii's historic earthquakes, resulted from movement of the Hilina slump in south Hawaii.

In 1975, Kilauea's south flank was the site of the magnitude 7.2 Kalapana earthquake, the highest magnitude event in this century. The Kalapana coast subsided as much as 11 feet, generating a huge tsunami that claimed two lives in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, destroyed houses in Punaluu, sank fishing boats in Keauhou Bay, and damaged boats and piers in Hilo. The most recent large earthquake on Kilauea's south flank occurred in June 1989. With a magnitude of 6.1, this quake caused much less damage than the 1975 event.

You've been watching too much news. Life goes on here. Of course we were worried about damage, especially since radio and TV were out for a couple hours after the event. But the county and the electric company got to work to fix the roads and power grid, Kona Hospital was evacuated in an orderly fashion, all safe. There were no casualties just some inconveniences. There's structural damage to some buildings on the Kona side and probably a bunch of broken dishes and cracked picture frames.

If this were really a life and property threatening event, the Big Island would turn out an 'all hands evolution' to help out.

Long term you'll get a lot of apparently undamaged (externally) buildings condemned, though - happened in Northridge. A lot of quake damage isn't spectacular.

You're right about that. In a building near me, I see some new hairline cracks in the concrete. In Kona, as in Hilo, a lot of the structures are running on thirty years old. Don't think they're on the verge of collapse but the structural engineers may red flag some.

I'd imagine most everything is somewhere where the topsoil is thin and foundations are on lava flows - no amplification from soft soil or ground liquefaction - that helps a lot.

Same quake directly under, say, Salt Lake City would probably kill a couple thousand people, at least.

Yea, me too. One Fox guy keeps referring to the "little villages", where houses are little more than "grass shacks". The guy hasn't been to the big island in the last 40 years?
