Scary thing for a Mom to have to hear. Yes?

Glad he is OK (shook up for sure in the nerve and adrenalin mode) and glad it was not a vacation trip. I know you wish it was a non trip altogether.

They are saying some injuries on the big island, sinkholes, damage, etc.

They also talked about people rushing to grocery stores for food, water, batteries, etc. Just goes to show it pays to be prepared and stocked up all the time so you don't have to run to the store when something happens!

I remember that quake, although I didn't feel it. :) And I'm not saying major aftershocks can't happen at other times, too - but the longer that it is since a major quake, the more likely that there won't be major aftershocks of that quake. (Although the longer it is, the more likely it is that there will be separate quakes which are not considered 'aftershocks', but are in the same general area.)

The media......at least CNN, since that's all I can get now......are having a field day. The bad news is I can't get the football games.

Aloha Howlin....you're a lady!

very true - its amazing how many people don't seem to have any supplies in their house, even for 2-3 days worth of isolation. batteries, flashlights, bottled water, canned food - just 3 hours after the incident, so many need supplies.

The odds of larger aftershocks go down logarithmically, according to what I've read.

That's the odds, not a reflection of what happened in reality in an individual situation.  We had already moved out of the Bay Area when Loma Prieta happened (sp?) but we had a couple of near 6 quakes while we were there from the late 70s to the early 80s and had family living there when the 89 quake hit.

Of course now we live in the Memphis area, 70 miles from the site of the largest earthquakes in contiguous US history.  There were three 8 plus quakes from November of 1811 to around February of 1812 with quakes over 5 almost every day during that period.  In California it's relatively hard seismic terrain and a quake dissipates quickly, but here it's all "gorpf" where the quake will just propagate forever.  And the folks  here don't have a clue about earthquake preparedness.  In the 1811/1812 events it is said that buildings were damaged in Washington DC and Boston from the quakes on the Mississippi.

Oh joy.

This is something I try to tell my kids all the time. Think a head and stock up BEFORE you need it. Just a little bit at a time can make a huge difference in your panic level in life. But what do I know? I'm just their mom :)

Gah, was starting to post the list of closed facilities on the Big Island, but since I'm at work, I got stopped after typing in three. BUT! The three I got down were:

Kona Community Hospital
Yano Hall
Honokaa Long Term Care Facility

Another hospital on the Big Island is also closed, but I don't have the name - it started with a K, but I admit quite freely that Hawaiian names tend to lose me unless I have a chance to copy them verbatim.

Can't get NFL TV? Next best thing is:

http://www.nfl.com/ Click on Scores.

All the good games are over with though. 9rs are getting steamrolled by the Bolt's O-line, and Rivers is throwing completions all over the field.

Phsstpok is right...just Google "New Madrid fault" and you'll get the most fascinating accounts of what was the biggest "recent" earthquake to his the contiguous 48.

I grew up in Illinois...it was legendary!
