I've opened this thread as a clearing house of information related to various judicial candidates in CA on the ballot for the Nov 2006 election. Feel free to add to it.
In a lengthy piece the SacBee reports "Corrigan has written four unanimous opinions. One that said a father could be required to comply with a foreign child-support order made 17 years earlier. She also has produced one dissent and one separate concurring opinion."
Also of note from that above piece, "Certainly Corrigan's most significant recent achievement was the completion of an eight-year project in which teams of legal scholars under her leadership translated the state's jury instructions into commonly understood terms."
On your ballot is CA Supreme Court Assoc Justice Joyce L. Kennard. She was appointed March 11, 1989, by California Governor George Deukmejian (R).
In 2004 Kennard cast a dissenting vote, supporting legal recognition of San Francisco's same-sex marriage licenses. She did agree to review a lower court decision that struck down a parental consent law back in 1994 but ultimately sided with the majority which affirmed the lower court ruling. Further details at the SacBee link above.
Ping your lists, add info you find helpful to deciding how to vote on these often stealth candidates.
The sanctions were against United States Justice Foundation for filing an allegedly frivolous motion to dismiss a lawsuit brought by James McElroy on behalf of Planned Parenthood of San Diego and Riverside Counties. Enright, the judge in the case, "later said he regretted his decision, but the appeals-court judges were unswayed by that fact..."
In the suit, Planned Parenthood of San Diego and Riverside Counties sought an injunction against a pro-life protester for allegedly harassing employees and customers of a San Diego-area clinic. Freepers may recognize attorney McElroy as the atheist's attorney from the Mt. Soledad War Memorial legal battle.
Huffman argued that the Hazelwood principle should apply at the college level, giving administrators virtually complete control over the content of student productions that are related to the curriculum. Huffman wrote:
"The majority unfortunately has snatched that authority (to control the curriculum) from (administrators') hands and given it over to individual faculty... and students. All of this is done in pursuit of academic freedom. Respectfully, the majority opinion will permit in matters of curriculum content the faculty tail to wag the administration dog. In my view, this sets a bad policy which I hope will not long endure." Morror Bay Law Presentation
Would you be so kind as to list each judicial candidate? I've not received a sample ballot so have no idea who's on the ballot.
I have always had qualms about women jurists (and female politicians, too). Although I think I'd make a fine judge myself, I'm not so sure about the rest of them. (With this kind of thinking, do you get my point?)
My boss recently went before a female judge who wouldn't let him say much of anything in defense of his client and spent the short period of time he was before her yelling and screaming at him. He was there to try to save a child from going into the "system," but apparently she wasn't interested in hearing what he had to say.
And there's not a damn thing anyone can do about it. So the kid went into a juvenile detention "home," with fine upstanding citizens standing there begging the judge (or trying to, anyway, unfortunately the judge wouldn't shut up long enough to hear what they had to say) to let them take the kid.
Granted, men judges can be unreasonable, too, but they aren't at the mercy of fluctuating hormones and menopause, and female irrationality.
Flame away ladies!
CA Supreme Court:
Joyce L. Kennard,
Carol A. Corrigan.
Fourth Appellate (San Diego, Riverside, Orange County):
Judith McConnell,
Patricia D. Benke,
Richard D. Huffman,

Cynthia G. Aaron,
Joan K. Irion,
Art W. McKinster,
Betty A. Richli,
Jeffrey King,
Douglas P. Miller,
Kathleen E. O'Leary,
Raymond J. Ikola.
In San Diego, Office #36 of the Superior Court has two candidates in a run-off:
Larry "Jake" Kincaid,
Rod Shelton.
There may be additional/different local judges across the state.
In a case where a member of the Israel Zion Coptic Church claimed his possession of large quantities of marajuana were covered by his religious freedom (the accused was known to share it with non-IZCC members, including children), Richli wrote, "It is a criminal offense to distribute marijuana, whether or not for profit The elimination of traffic of illegal drugs is a compelling state interest The court reasonably could conclude that is not restrained from association with users of marijuana, defendant would continue to distribute marijuana, both within and without his church." details here
In another case, Richli wrote an opinion for a decision which struck down a law giving cops the right to sue for defamation if someone fires a false complaint. A law like section 47.5, which poses a risk of chilling citizens exercise of their right to complain of official misconduct, therefore must be justified by a governmental interest that is truly compelling...
Presumably, that is why, apparently, no state other than California has elected to single out defamation of peace officers for disparate treatment...
For Your Information - In the San Diego County elections, Judicial Candidate Larry "Jake" Kincaid has been endorsed by the Republican Party. His opponent, Rod Shelton, has been endorsed by LA RAZA and the ACLU. Please make the appropriate choice on election day - it shouldn't be too hard to decide.
Here are some more judicial candidates up for retention, along with some party affiliations and nominating governor names (which I did not verify), according to Ventura County Republican Central Committee website.
The VCRCC basically endorsed Republicans and recommended "no" votes for Democrats.
Among these judges up for retention, only Gov. Schwarzenegger nominated judges from the opposite major party.
Vote Yes or No for each judge.

Here is a website that I have found very useful in the past. The judicial races are not posted yet, but it will probably be worthwhile checking back closer to the election.
