Unfortunetely you've run into an incorrectly-remembered meme which is impossible to kill.
Neither the kid in Tampa or his family were Muslim. The nutters got their panties in a gigantic wad over the discovery that the family had an Arab name which had been changed which they claimed the press didn't mention enough. However, as it turned out, the kid was 3/4ths Italian and 1/4 Arab, through one grandfather - said grandfather was an immigrant to New England in the earliest part of the 20th century, and basically all such immigrants were Christians from Lebanon and Syria. The family actually DID have some connections to the mafia, though.
