Fate.
If the Yankee's had won the series with Detroit he would have been in Oakland.
I was at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore in December of 1976, when a plane crashed into the stands. In fact, I was sitting in the section where the plane hit. If the Colts hadn't misses a game tying field goal with seconds remaining, the game would have gone into overtime and hundreds, including me, would have been hurt/killed.
Sometimes fate goes your way sometimes it doesn't.
Prayers to his family.

Actually, he would still have been in New York (the Yankees would have had home field advantage) - but I doubt he would have been flying his plane on game day.

If the Yankee's had won the series with Detroit he would have been in Oakland. Then it IS A-Rod's fault!
Okay, I'll stop now.

No disrespect for Lidle or his family but as soon as the Yankee Pitcher was announced to have been the pilot the story took a weird turn from "Bush's fault" that planes are allowed to fly unchecked on the Hudson to all about Cory Lidle.
No reflection on Lidle but it just shows the power of celebrity.
