A fire broke out at an ammunition depot at a U.S. base in southeast Baghdad on Tuesday night, setting off a series of explosions, the U.S. military said. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Conservatives at one time understood many things that they now seem to have forgotten. They understood that you could not "nation build". That democracy is only for those that have a inclination and willingness to fight for it. That no nation can bring freedom to a people that are unwilling or undesirious of supporting same. That one could not ignore the laws of our nation that require stopping at our border before coming across. These and many other principles that conservatives held dear have gone by the board in this administration. While it is true that the alternative (the leftist democrats) would be worse, we have a lot of work to do to reinstill conservative values amoung so-called conservatives.
God bless you Dimez Apart.

Blasts rock US army base in Iraq

There were no immediate reports of casualties at the base, known as Forward Operating Base Falcon. The US military blamed the explosions on ammunition "cooking off" in the heat. They said they did not know what had caused the initial fire. Blasts from the base, in the south of the city, were heard for miles around. The BBC's Andrew North, in Baghdad, said the explosions started at about 2300 (2100 BST) and were becoming "evermore frequent" as the fire appeared to be spreading. "Given the number and the scale of these explosions - and this is a very large base with a large number of troops - casualties are a possibility," he said.

Ummm... sorry to inform you we're not ever. W is not going to increase troops levels and if the Dims win in '08 they'll put out. Sorry, but we've lost it.
Thanks for the map! Always helps to have a perspective on the location.
".........NOT MANY CASUALTIES BUT MANY STILL SUFFERING. PRAY FOR OUR TROOPS."
Yes, prayers for our troops.
I hope protective gear for them has improved since '68.
At this stage, it's best to wait and see what the fire was. Perhaps it was a vehicle or fuel too close to the ammo. When Doha went up at the end of Gulf War I, it was a vehicle that caught on fire and ended up destroying more vehicles than we'd lost in the whole war. By tomorrow, the forces on the ground will have begun an investigation and will have some preliminary findings that will indicate the likely cause. The investigation overall will take quite a while.

The stories this morning are as varied as the accounts in this forum.
From my little corner of the world - last night sounded as though someone thumped away at the wall with a sledge hammer.
Folks wonder why I choose to sleep in a hardened structure. It was serious enough (at first) for bunker time.
Who said life is boring?
Allegra - how did you folks do over there?
Shouldn't you have pinged her?
Too many people standing around doing not much.
Thanks. I'm OK. Some of that stuff rattled our windows and shook our buildings here in central Baghdad. It was late at night...I heard the helicopters all going and thought the sh!t had hit the fan.
But I was so tired, I just went to bed and slept through some of it.
I can't tell if it's cloudy out this morning or if that's smoke. We're all sniffling and coughing though...
Fine over here. It was sure noisy last night, though, wasn't it? I thought it was Paladins at first with all those loud BOOMS. It was shake, rattle and roll time.
Now I'm just sniffly from the smoke. Yecchh.
Glad you guys are OK. I didn't know what was going on last night while it was happening.
